Jason Marsalis

Jason Marsalis (* 4. March 1977 in New Orleans ) is an American jazz - drummer , vibraphonist and composer .

Jason Marsalis is the youngest son of Ellis Marsalis and brother of the jazz musicians Wynton Marsalis , Branford Marsalis and Delfeayo Marsalis . He made his first appearance as a professional musician with his father when he was 12 years old. He studied classical drums at Loyola University and then played with mainstream jazz musicians (as with his father) as well as fusion funk, Brazilian music (Casa Samba) and even Celtic folk music in a band. With trumpeter Irvin Mayfield and drummer Bill Summers , he founded the fusion band Les Hombres Calientes. He also played for a long time in a trio with the pianist Marcus Roberts . In 1998 he released his debut album "The year of the drummer." Recently he led his own quartet, where he turned more to vibraphone playing. He has lived in France since 2016.

In 2011 he received the NEA Jazz Masters Fellowship like the rest of the Marsalis family musicians . In 2013 he won the Down Beat Critic Polls in the Rising Star category for vibraphone.
