Martin Fondse (born February 20, 1967 in Bergen op Zoom ) is a Dutch jazz musician ( piano , arrangement , composition).

Act

Fondse studied composition with Bob Brookmeyer , Dolf de Kinkelder and Bill Dobbins . He studied piano with Robert Vermeulen , Rob van den Broeck and Kenny Werner .

Fondse founded the De Achtbaan octet in 1992 , which in 1995 became the Martin Fondse Oktemble , which recorded its debut album. In 2006 he founded a trio (with Eric van der Westen and Dirk-Peter Kölsch ), which he occasionally strengthened with Claudio Puntin . With the Starvinsky Orkestar (today Martin Fondse Orchestra ) he founded his own large formation in 2008. He also worked with Pat Metheny , Terry Bozzio , Lenine , Peter Erskine , Doudou N'Diaye Rose , Vernon Reid , George Duke , Cristina Branco , Ernst Reijseger , Mariza , Sezen Aksu , Nils Wogram , Basement Jaxx , Andy Bruce and Matthew Herbert .

He mostly appears with larger ensembles such as the Ebony Band , the Metropole Orkest , the hr-Bigband , the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra , Holland Symfonia or Limburgs Symfonisch Orkest. Mainly he lets his own compositions be interpreted. These combine elements from different musical cultures with those from traditional big band literature. His music has been presented at the Jazz International Rotterdam Festival, the North Sea Jazz Festival , Holland Festival , Moers Festival , Nederlandse Muziekdagen, November Music and the Dutch Jazz Meeting.

Between 2015 and 2017 he was director of the Sena National Youth Orchestra .

Prizes and awards

Fondse won the 1996 Julius Hemphill Award from the Jazz Composers Alliance in Boston. He has received several national and international awards for his orchestral works and film music, including an Edison for the best Dutch jazz album in 2012 and the Zilveren Notenkraker (2016, NJJO). In 2017 he was awarded the Boy Edgar Prize . In the same year he and Lenine received two Prêmio da Música Brasileira for their project The Bridge .
