RIAS Big Band Berlin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The RIAS Big Band Berlin , usually just called the RIAS Big Band , is a German big band and the successor to the RIAS dance orchestra .

When radio in the American sector ( RIAS ) was dissolved on January 1, 1994, the orchestra and four other East and West Berlin radio ensembles came under the umbrella of the newly founded Rundfunk-Orchester und -Chöre gGmbH . In 1995 jazz trombonist and band leader Jiggs Whigham became the new chief conductor. At the same time, as part of the artistic new beginning, the name was changed to RIAS Big Band . Several international tours followed; Soloists like Mark Nightingale recorded albums with the band. In 2000 Whigham ended his term as a conductor and the big band was led by guest conductors such as Peter Herbolzheimer and Jörg Achim Keller .

In 2001, due to financial problems, the RIAS Big Band was spun off from the Rundfunkorchester und Chöre GmbH. The orchestra was not allowed to perform for a long time because of labor disputes. In June 2003 the band played again for the first time. In 2004 the RIAS Big Band reorganized itself as a non-profit GmbH. The orchestra is supported by the Friends of the RIAS BIG BAND eV association and the Berlin-Brandenburg broadcasting company . Jörg Achim Keller took over the musical direction.
