The RIAS dance orchestra was founded and put together in November 1948 by Werner Müller . It consisted of 33 instrumentalists. It quickly achieved a high level of awareness and popularity and was invited to tours in Japan , among other places . When the RIAS and the voice of the GDR were merged to form the new Deutschlandradio Kultur in the 1990s, the RIAS dance orchestra was redesigned. In 1993 it became part of the Rundfunk-Orchester und -Chöre gGmbH , and in 1995 the RIAS Big Band Berlin was founded as a successor ensemble .
