Voice of the GDR

The voice of the GDR was a radio program of the radio of the GDR , which was also intended for German-speaking listeners outside the borders of the GDR. Like all GDR stations, it was an instrument of the SED state party , had a high proportion of words and offered political information, entertainment and culture. From the start of the program in 1949 to 1971 and from 1990 onwards, the voice of the GDR was the German station .

history

After the State Broadcasting Committee decided in 1971 to replace the Deutschlandender and Berliner Welle broadcasters, which are geared towards the Federal Republic and West Berlin, with the voice of the GDR , the new program started on November 15, 1971. The editorial offices were located in the Nalepastrasse radio station .

Kurt Goldstein became the first director of the station . The voice of the GDR broadcast its program over long wave (177 kHz), medium wave (783 and 1359 kHz) and FM GDR-wide and could also be received in the border area of the Federal Republic of Germany . Especially on long wave, the program could be received without any problems during the day in the whole of Germany and beyond.

On February 8, 1990, the voice of the GDR was renamed in Deutschlandsender (DLS) and four months later, on June 16, 1990, it was merged with the program Radio DDR II to form DS Kultur . DS Kultur went on January 1st, 1994 on Deutschlandradio .

Voice of the GDR has been a trademarked blog since 2011 with a focus on East Germany and society. The blog was shortlisted for the alternative media award in 2018 .
