West Wendover is a city in Elko County in the US state of Nevada .
West Wendover has 4721 inhabitants (as of US Census 2000 ) on an area of 19.4 km². The city lies on the eastern border of Nevada and the western corner of the Great Salt Desert (Great Salt Lake desert), bordering the city of Wendover in Utah , with which it is often confused. It's on Interstate 80 . Because of its proximity and economic links with Utah, West Wendover is in the Mountain Time Zone , while the rest of Nevada is in the Pacific Time Zone .
West Wendover is an affluent city benefiting from high taxes from the Nevada gambling industry. The place operates five fully equipped casino hotels : The Red Garter, Wendover Nugget, Rainbow, Peppermill and Montego Bay. For this reason, the much poorer Wendover in Utah wants to be incorporated into West Wendover, a wish that is shared by the residents of West Wendover. To date, however, this has not been decided.
A few miles away are the Bonneville Flats , part of the Great Salt Flats , which is often used for world speed record attempts due to its flatness and size.
