Guru Guru is a German Krautrock band . She is considered an important representative of the genre in the 1970s.

Band history

The band was founded in 1968 as "The Guru Guru Groove" by the drummer Mani Neumeier , the bassist Uli Trepte and the guitarist Eddy Naegeli (replaced in December 1968 by Herbert Sax and from March 1969 by Jim Kennedy). The drummer and bassist came from the free jazz environment. Neumeier had already worked together with Trepte for years with the pianist Irène Schweizer . In 1968 the band played electrically amplified, "spacey" experimental (rock) music. Her influences at the time included Jimi Hendrix , Frank Zappa , The Who , The Rolling Stones and Pink Floyd .

From 1968 to 2014 Guru Guru gave about 3,300 concerts in Europe, but also in Japan, USA or India (as of 12/2014) and were presented in hundreds of radio broadcasts.

environment

Guru Guru never referred to themselves as a Krautrock band, although they are counted among its protagonists. In their self-image they have always been part of the musical underground . Amon Düül , Can and Xhol Caravan were among their friends with whom they made sessions. Musicians from Kraan , Karthago and Cluster can also be heard on Guru-Guru LPs .

Her appearances in the late 1960s and early 1970s were heavily influenced by politics. They organized concerts together with the Socialist German Student Union , read political texts between their pieces of music and occasionally played in prisons. Guru Guru considered themselves politically independent. Their live shows were (and are) considered extravagant and anarchic, the line-up of the band changed frequently, they lived together like a commune in the village of Langenthal and Finkenbach in the Odenwald and experimented with hallucinogenic drugs (one of their pieces is typically called The LSD March ).

In 1977 Guru Guru and the Finkenbacher fire brigade launched the Finkenbach Festival in Finkenbach (Oberzent) , which has been continued annually until the present (2019). In addition, the band's 50th anniversary was celebrated there in 2018.

In the same year the television film Self Defense was broadcast on ZDF. The 1976 cast of Guru Guru took over the role of the group "Pied Piper", which settled in a village, but was rejected by the locals as a bum . The band later bought a PA system from the fee, which they used to produce their other LPs. Hartmut Griesmayr's film is based on a true story: In the mid-1970s a Roma was shot in a German village ; the shooter was acquitted on his claim to have acted in self-defense.

Musician

The composition of the band has changed countless times in the course of its existence, which is due to the central role of Mani Neumeier, who once said in an interview that he does not play drums, but orchestra. In the early 1970s, the guitarist Ax Genrich was part of the regular line-up for a longer period, while guitarist and saxophonist Roland Schaeffer ( Brainstorm ), Yogi Karpenkiel ( collective ) and “Sepp” Josef Jandrisits ( Mashuun ) joined the team in the mid-1970s .

At the end of the 70s the group included Dieter Bornschlegel (formerly Atlantis , now Dein Schatten ), Peter Kühmstedt, Ingo Bischof and Hellmut Hattler von Kraan . Butze Fischer († 2002; from Embryo ) and Bruno Schaab ( Night Sun ) were also important.

In the 1980s, Hans Reffert ( Flute and Voice , Zauberfinger ), Lise Kraus, Peter Wolbrandt ( Kraan ), Uli Züfle, Chowmeier and Razem Rübel ( Ravibeat ) took part. Uli Krug and Erwin Ditzner were also brief members of the band in the mid-80s . They were later founding members of the Mardi Gras.bb .

Luigi Archetti played the guitar in the 1990s. From 2005 Hans Reffert was there again. On the autumn tour 2008 he was represented by Jan Lindqvist.

On the album PSY (40 Years Guru Guru) from February 2008, Jan Fride (-Wolbrandt) is a guest musician (in addition to Hellmut Hattler, Dieter Moebius , Luigi Archetti and others) with Guru Guru. In addition to the above, various other musicians from a wide variety of music genres played with the group, sometimes only for a short time, one or two concerts or a record or CD recording.

Long-time guitarist Hans Reffert died on February 22nd, 2016 at the age of 69.

Jan Lindqvist joined the band for the late guitarist Hans Reffert in the spring of 2016 and has been touring Germany with Guru Guru ever since.

Publicity

Guru Guru have published over forty records so far, which have been sold more than five hundred thousand times. They have appeared in films and over a hundred times on radio and television (including the Beat Club ). In 1976 Guru Guru was the first German band in the WDR - Rockpalast . In 2001 an underground biography entitled 33 Years of High Times with Guru Guru was published by the Free Underground Press , Kuala Lumpur.
