Michael Karoli

Michael Karoli (born April 29, 1948 in Straubing ; † November 17, 2001 in Essen ) was a German musician and composer.

Life

Michael Karoli grew up in Straubing and spent the end of his school days in St. Gallen . After graduating from high school, he began studying law , which he never finished. In 1968 he became a member of the group Can , of which he was a guitarist until 1978. In early 1975 he met Shirley Argwings-Kodhek, whom he married in 1981 in Essen. In the mid-1980s, Karoli moved with his wife to Nice , where his two daughters were born. At the end of 1998 he got cancer . Despite two operations, Karoli died in November 2001, he was buried in the historic cemetery in Essen-Bredeney .

Career

Michael Karoli learned guitar , violin and cello as a child . During his school days in Switzerland, he played in various school and jazz bands. Through his friendship with his guitar teacher Holger Czukay , Karoli became a guitarist at Can. From 1974 he took over the singing there with Irmin Schmidt . After Can's dissolution in 1978, he opened his own recording studio "Outer Space Studios" in an old olive oil mill in the French Alps. During this time he developed the microsonic recording technology. From 1978 Karoli devoted himself to the drums in addition to his recording studio . From 1981 to 1986 he studied African rhythm and dance with Seni Camara. During this time he perfected his compositional concept. In 1984 Karoli gave several concerts in Germany with Holger Czukay, Jaki Liebezeit and Jah Wobble (some of them broadcast by the TV program Rockpalast ). Between 1977 and 1995 Karoli played guitar and bass on various albums and film soundtracks by Irmin Schmidt and Holger Czukay. From 1986 Karoli worked with Holger Czukay on the Can album Rite Time , which was released in 1988. At the same time, both released together in 1987 with the Belgian singer Arno Charlatan and in 1989 Flux & Mutability with David Sylvain, on which Karoli played the flute. In 1992 he released Can Last Night Sleep and wrote the score for Until the End of the World by Wim Wenders . In 1993 he recorded an album with Belgian Associality, which he also co-produced. At the end of the 1990s, he played numerous concerts with Damo Suzuki , Mani Neumeier , Matthias Keul, Mandjao and his group Sofortkontakt, among others . His last concert took place in 2001 in New York, together with Suicide, James Chance, Hvratsky , Lary 7 and Malcolm Mooney in the club "The Cooler".
