Holger Czukay (born March 24, 1938 as Holger Schüring in Danzig ; † September 5, 2017 in Weilerswist ) was a German bass player who became internationally known as a member and co-founder of the band Can .

Career

Czukay began his musical career in 1960 when he made his first recordings and played in an amateur jazz band. From 1963 to 1966 he studied composition with Karlheinz Stockhausen at the Cologne University of Music . In the following two years he occasionally worked as a music teacher, including at the Artland-Gymnasium in Quakenbrück under the name Holger Schüring. At that time he took part in sessions with the beat band The Remo Four . In 1968 he founded the band Can together with Irmin Schmidt , with whom he had studied in Cologne . In 1977 he left the group.

As a solo artist, he has released a number of solo albums, also with the participation of former Can members. He worked with several international artists, including in the early 1980s with Jah Wobble , The Edge , the Eurythmics , David Sylvian , Brian Eno , and Phew . In 1983 he worked with the band Trio . In 1987 he played the leading role in the experimental film War of Tones , to which he also contributed the entire music and in which trio singer Stephan Remmler also appeared. In the early 1990s, Czukay worked with artists such as Peter Gabriel and Annie Lennox ; since then he has often appeared together with his partner Ursula Schüring (“U-She” / “Ursa Major”).

In the mid-1990s there were several joint projects with Air Liquide and with Air Liquide musician Dr. Walker aka Ingmar Koch .

On September 5, 2017, Czukay was found dead by a neighbor in the "Can-Studio", a former cinema that he also used as an apartment, in Weilerswist near Cologne. Since the cause of death is still unknown, the criminal police are investigating the closer circumstances of death. He passed away five weeks after his wife Ursula, who died on July 28 at the age of 55. Czukay was buried next to Ursula Schüring in Cologne's Melaten cemetery on September 14, 2017 . The grave is there in parcel "T". Holger Czukay's final resting place is diagonally across from the grave of drummer and Can bandmate Jaki Liebezeit , who died of pneumonia about eight months before Czukay's death.

Holger Czukay Prize for Pop Music from the City of Cologne

In June 2019 it became known that the Pop Music Prize of the City of Cologne, which was awarded for the first time this year and endowed with 15,000 euros , is to be named after Holger Czukay. According to the Council proposal, this is intended to honor the legacy of Holger Czukays; the name is intended to place the future award winners “in connection with the extraordinary work of this artist” and at the same time help to make the award known nationwide. The award goes to individuals, bands or institutions who have made outstanding contributions to the city's pop music scene with “outstanding achievements”.

The first prize winners were announced on September 11, 2019, and the prizes were awarded on October 31: the main prize, endowed with 15,000 euros, went to musician and artist Wolfgang Voigt , and the honorary prize to CAN founding member Irmin Schmidt .

For 2020, the jury awarded the main prize to the artist duo Mouse on Mars : "Mouse on Mars are among the few experimental German pop artists who are internationally recognized (...), but return regularly to Cologne." The electro-disco is awarded the honorary prize -Formation Gina X performance (s) recognized for her life's work. The award ceremony will again take place on October 31.
