Phew

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Phew (* 1959 ) is a Japanese singer working in the rock and jazz avant-garde.

Life

Phew was a member of the punk band Aunt Sally in the late 1970s . In 1981 she recorded her first self-titled solo album with Holger Czukay , Jaki Liebezeit (both from Can ) and Jah Wobble (from Public Image Ltd. ) in Conny Plank's studio . The album was later re-released several times, with additional tracks, most recently in 2005. Her album View followed in 1987 and Himitsu no Knife in 1995 , both with Tatsuo Kondo (keyboards and other instruments) and other Japanese musicians. In between, she released another album, Our Likeness , recorded in Conny Plank's studio in 1992, on which Alexander Hacke from the Einstürzende Neubauten was represented in addition to Jaki Liebezeit . Chrislo Haas ( DAF , Der Plan ) played the saxophone on "Like Water and Water".

Again and again she took part in projects by other artists, such as Dreamspeed in 1992 , an album by Anton Fier with Bill Laswell , Bootsy Collins , Buckethead and Nicky Skopelitis . In 1994, Blind Light followed in a similar line-up , on which Lori Carson and Lydia Kavanagh can also be heard as singers. She wrote all the lyrics for both albums. From 2001 she worked several times with Most, a band around the guitarists Seiichi Yamamoto and Hisato Yamamoto. At the same time she was also a member of Big Picture. In September 2001 Phew Video was released , which traced her musical life in bands and also solo on the basis of live recordings from 1979 to 2001 including interviews.

In June 2001 she released the songs "Kôyasan" and "Mishiho" with The Unknown Cases, a project by Helmut Zerlett . In 2009 a cooperation with Bikke, an old companion of Aunt Sally, appeared. In 2010 she released her solo album Five Finger Discount , which also includes a cover version of " Love Me Tender ". In addition to Japanese colleagues, Jim O'Rourke was involved as a bassist and keyboardist. In June 2011 she took part in the Tonofon Festival in Tokorozawa with Seiichi Yamamoto , two pieces later appeared on a DVD of the festival. In 2012 she worked with Erika Kobayashi and Dieter Moebius as the UNDARK project ( Radium Girls 2011 ).

style

The touch-and-go - Fanzine moved in a review of Phews debut single 終曲(フィナレー) comparisons of Suicide , Phews music is but "less compact" and let the emotional intensity of Suicide miss. Instead, Phew's music is cold, distant and mechanical.
