The Plan is a German electronic music band that was originally founded in 1979 under the name Weltaufstandsplan in Düsseldorf by Moritz Reichelt alias Moritz R®, Kai Horn and Frank Fenstermacher . The band is considered to be one of the pioneers of the Neue Deutsche Welle .

Band history

Kai Horn got out before the first recordings. Together with Chrislo Haas and Robert Görl (both German-American friendship ), a first single was recorded. The recordings were made during a jam session in the practice cellar and were recorded on a cassette dictation machine . Cuttings of it were published in 1979 as an EP and brought out in an edition of 1,500 copies on their own. This was the starting shot for Plan's own label Warning Records , which was later renamed Ata Tak . These first recordings were reminiscent of Throbbing Gristle and the early phase of the US formation Chrome .

A little later, Kurt Dahlke alias Pyrolator (ex-German-American friendship) joined the formation. Under his influence, the group began to become significantly more musical and less experimental. The debut album Geri Reig , released in 1980 , was still very experimental. Influences from bands like The Residents and Kraftwerk could be seen here . Some tracks were deliberately designed to be "inaudible" by the group in order to explore musical boundaries. The single Da Vorne Steht 'Ne Ampel , released in late 1980, was much more catchy.

With this, the group embarked on a musical path that they later referred to as "electronic hit". In fact, the single became one of Neue Deutsche Welle's first hits , and the plan has now received contract offers from major record companies. However, it was decided to remain independent and only entered into a cooperation with Teldec , which brought out the single again. In 1981 the LP Normalette Surprise followed , on which the group presented further "electronic hits" and thus shaped their own style.

In 1982 the director Rainer Kirberg hired the group for his film The Last Revenge . The plan didn't just write the soundtrack for the film; Moritz R® designed the surrealistic, partly based on the film Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari- like scenes, while Frank Fenstermacher had a small role as an actor. The film was broadcast by ZDF as part of the small television game and received mixed reviews. The music for this was much more experimental and less catchy than the previous works.

In 1984 the group released two more singles. Gummitwist was not the expected hit, but the group made it into the music show Formula One . Shortly thereafter, the double single Golden Cheapos followed , on which there are three instrumental pieces and marked the turn of the band to a musical direction that later became known as the easy-listening revival or lounge . A successful tour of Japan followed, which was recorded on video (JaPlan) . Especially for the Japanese market, an LP with some pieces unreleased in Germany was released under the name JaPlan and re-released as a CD in 2002.

The compilation LP Fette Jahre was released in Germany in 1985 and consists of single tracks, outtakes and new recordings of well-known pieces. The self-deprecating cover shows the group dressed as homeless people in the park. New material appeared in 1987, It's A Strange And Strange World . The title comes from the film Blue Velvet by director David Lynch . The completely black cover of the LP is striking. The song 1 Mann 1 Ball , featured on this album, was covered a little later by The True Heino . With the advent of the compact disc , the group decided to release a best-of CD release, which was released in 1988 under the title Perlen .

Labeling and sales work had impaired the band's focus on music at an early stage. In response to differing views on artistic priorities, Moritz R® left Ata Tak in 1983 and moved to Hamburg . Since then, The Plan was no longer a full-time project, but met occasionally for sporadic activities. In 1989, another record was released with Die Peitsche Des Lebens , which was a bit darker in places than previous works. The album Live At The Tiki Ballroom… followed in 1993, the first edition of which included a mini CD with “Techno” versions of some of the Plan titles. Then the formation broke up.

Moritz R® now devoted himself more to painting and processed his experiences with Der Plan in the book Der Plan - Glanz und Elend of the Neue Deutsche Welle . Pyrolator and Frank Fenstermacher founded the trance formation A Certain Frank a little later and have been involved in Fehlfarben since 2002 .

In 2003, Moritz R® , Achim Treu and JJ Jones founded Der Plan in Berlin as Der Plan 4.0. The album The Conspiracy followed in 2004 .

At the parties for Andreas Dorau's 50th birthday in Hamburg and Berlin in January 2014, Der Plan played a short set for the first time in 22 years in the original formation Moritz R®, Pyrolator and Window Maker.

In May 2017 the single Let the cat stand and in June of the same year the album Unkapitulbaren .

In November 2018, Der Plan appeared in the Kampnagel in Hamburg.
