Helmut Werner Zerlett (born March 29, 1957 in Cologne ) is a German keyboardist , composer , music producer and film composer . He became known as a band leader in Harald Schmidt's shows . Zerlett plays the Hammond organ , Fender Rhodes and synthesizers .

life and career

Helmut Zerlett's music education began in 1962 on the electronic organ, and later on the church organ and the piano. From 1974 he made various studio recordings and albums with Jaki Liebezeit ( Can ) and Reebop Kwaku Baah ( Traffic , The Rolling Stones ). This was followed by work with the Stockhausen student Holger Czukay and David Sylvian . From 1981 he worked increasingly as a music producer in London (Abbey Road Studios / Matrix Studios). In 1983 he composed the dance floor classic “Masimbabele” with Reebop Kwaku Baah and Stefan Krachten . He composed his first film music with Sheldon Ancel in 1984 for the short film "The Last Trip to Harrisburg" with Udo Kier and Rainer Werner Fassbinder . At the time of the Neue Deutsche Welle (NDW) he belonged to the band of Joachim Witt and took with this 1983 album Märchenblau on. From 1987 to 2005 he was part of Marius Müller-Westernhagen's studio band and accompanied him on stage. In 1990 and 1991 he worked with Stephan Remmler on his album Projekt F - In Search of the Treasure of Lost Emotions , which contains cover versions of Freddy Quinn . In 1993 he produced several electronic albums with Gottfried and Nicole Tollmann under the name "Baked Beans" on the Sven Väth label EYE Q RECORDS. With the Joseph Beuys student Walter Dahn he also composed several recordings as # 9 DREAM. The official Nürburgring anthem "King of the Ring" was produced by Zerlett and the then Reamonn singer Rea Garvey , he himself also drove in the Alfa 147 Cup at the Nürburgring and several other racetracks.

From 1995 to 2003 he was musical director, sidekick and band leader at the Harald Schmidt Show . In the media satire " Late Show " by Helmut Dietl in 1999, he joined as a band leader with his band in the Hannes Angel show the private broadcaster Tele C on. In 2004 he played a supporting role in the movie 7 Dwarfs - Men Alone in the Forest . From 2006 he was (in every episode) a surprise guest on the RTL comedy Frei Schnauze . In October 2007, Zerlett returned to Harald Schmidt as musical director and band leader of the new late-night show Schmidt & Pocher and also accompanied him musically in the follow-up show Harald Schmidt (2009-2011). In the second run of the Harald Schmidt Show , which was broadcast from September 2011 to April 2012 on Sat. 1 and from September 2012 to March 2014 on Sky Deutschland , Zerlett was also part of the program as band leader.

Since the mid-1990s, Zerlett has concentrated on the composition, production and orchestration of film scores.

Helmut Zerlett is the son of Helmut and Katharina Zerlett and has three sisters. He is married and the father of three daughters, two from his first marriage to Anja Zerlett (Isis and Jana ) and one from his second marriage to Natallia Zerlett (née Bahamolava).
