Reviews

“The television melodrama 'Nobody is an island' for its part offers a famous actress of our day a role platform: Iris Berben [...] pulls out all the stops between hysteria and depression, between radiant aura, eccentric moodiness and total abandonment. Such an ensemble of characters and feelings is commonly associated with the term diva. But Iris Berben's playing consistently seems as if she herself no longer believes in the pathos that the diva role basically demands - and which has simply worn out a lot in the meantime. "

“Based on the bestseller of the same name by Johannes Mario Simmel, published in 1975, Iris Berben's in-house director Carlo Rola staged this melodrama, which was designed entirely for its leading actress. Berben is convincing in the role of the no longer very young but celebrated film diva, whose outwardly perfect facade is gradually beginning to crumble. However, screenwriter Knut Boeser [...] packed a little too much of a good thing into the story. The split mother-daughter relationship alone would have provided material for a film, quite apart from the elaboration of the star cult with all its disadvantages. But this is also how the problem of handicapped children is addressed, blackmail is supposed to create tension and finally there is also a general settlement with the oh-so-bad film and media company. "

“The latest Simmel production 'Nobody is an island' (the novel was published in 1975) in any case guards the sheer nothingness behind the beautiful glow of its pictures. If ZDF is serious about rejuvenating its audience, it should put an end to this Simmel-Berben-Rola box as soon as possible. [...] The fictional Sylvia Moran, played by Iris Berben with disciplined affectation on the line between beauty and monster, stands strangely lost in the gallery of unfortunate celebrities that film and television love and have to stage again and again. You don't really want to know anything about this synthetic figure. Anything that points beyond the simple plot, that could be generalized and even reveal something new about the difficulty of remaining human as a mega-star, is in vain. "
