action

Architect Ruprecht Welser and his wife Johanna have just returned to pre-Christmas Hamburg from a vacation trip from Dubai . Ruprecht, called "Rupi", is angry because the machine is several hours late. In the evening he is invited to an important event at which he may be awarded the contract for his dream project - the construction of a residential complex. He doesn't want to be late and lets the taxi go home, although Johanna is still taking the baggage cart away. He only notices that she is not in the car when there is no answer to his questions. Johanna has to wait until the evening when a taxi is finally free. She is driven by the young Ellie, who is amazed that Johanna was forgotten by her husband at the airport. When Johanna arrives at her villa, Rupi directs her straight back into the taxi, as his event is about to start. Johanna is allowed to listen to her husband's allegations on the drive and in the end does not follow Rupi to the event. Instead, she asks Ellie to drive on.

While Rupi wins the contract for the construction project, Johanna spends the evening with Ellie. Both watch a wrestling event where Johanna realizes she is angry with her husband. Rupi, who tries in vain to reach her on her cell phone at home, has her credit card blocked without further ado, as his son Leo says that his wife, who is separated from him, always came home. For Johanna it is the ultimate reason not to come home that night. She is allowed to stay with Ellie, who turns out to be a single mother with two children.

The next morning Rupi is barely able to have breakfast as everything was always prepared by Johanna. The fact that his son Leo lives with his son, who has fallen silent due to the imminent divorce, doesn't make it any easier. Meanwhile, Johanna makes the acquaintance of Ellie's friend Marcel, who came back to Ellie from a tour just before Christmas. She hopes that they can celebrate Christmas together in two days. Suddenly the doorbell rings and construction workers are at the door. They tell Ellie that her house, in which only tenant Mrs. Basinski lives next to her, is to be demolished the next day. In fact, the chaotic Ellie received appropriate notices some time ago, but always just skimmed them and ignored them. Johanna can persuade the workers to deduct with reference to a fictitious paragraph. She found out that real estate agent Ramona Heyer was responsible for the demolition and went to see her with Ellie. She does not know that the demolition is a preliminary stage for the construction of the new residential complex that Rupi is to realize. Ramona Heyer is cold towards the two women and Johanna plays her only card: Ms. Basinski and Ellie's leases cannot be terminated due to the long rental period. Demolishing the building would therefore be illegal. You are mobilizing the press and television reporting the case. Johanna's lawyer, her former schoolmate, obtains an injunction against the demolition of the house.

Meanwhile, Rupi realizes that his own wife is fighting for the house. He knows the law is on their side. At the same time, his client, Ramona Heyer, puts pressure on him to push through the demolition by all means. Some order has returned to his private life. His father, Grandpa Friedrich, came to see him for Christmas. Since he was always brought by Johanna, this task has now taken over Rupi's assistant Marion, who meets Leo in the Welser house. The two fall in love while Grandpa Friedrich takes care of the household and decorates the Christmas tree.

December 24th is coming and Johanna, Ellie and the family are preparing for Christmas. The obtained disposition gives them courage. Rupi meanwhile has to work until evening and learns from Ramona Heyer that she is not giving up: She has ordered a foreclosure sale of the house for December 27th . She wants to purchase the building herself at auction, which would invalidate the old rental agreements. Rupi realizes that Ramona is playing a wrong, anti-social game and quits his cooperation. In front of their villa, Rupi meets his wife and Ellie, who are about to steal Ramona's Christmas tree from the property, and helps them.

In the meantime Leo and son Nick, Marion and Grandpa Friedrich have come to Ellie to celebrate. Johanna and Rupi bring the whole group the bad news of the planned foreclosure auction. Pensioner Ms. Basinski then tries to commit suicide, which is discovered by Grandpa Friedrich, and little Nick, Leo's son, speaks for the first time in a long time by asking the others to organize an ambulance for Ms. Basinski. Meanwhile, Johanna discovered astonishing things: Grandpa Friedrich once saved the lives of 17 people as a firefighter during the storm surge in 1962 . In addition to the current mayor of the city, Ms. Basinski, who was already living in the now endangered house, was among those rescued. When Ramona Heyer arrives a little later with an eviction notice for the house, Johanna can now show her the certificate in the presence of the mayor, which immediately puts the house under a preservation order. It is a memorial that commemorates the events of that time. The mayor also condemns Ramona Heyer's anti-social behavior. The beaten realtor has the police organized to clear the property out and drives away. Johanna decides to celebrate Christmas afterwards. She is reconciled with her husband, Leo and Marion become a couple and Grandpa Friedrich has finally found a person in Frau Basinski to whom he can report about the Hamburg storm surge.

criticism

For the film service it was Christmas ... without me, my darling! a “moderately melancholy (television) comedy about two fundamentally different types of women and a couple whose different attitudes towards life clash after year and day”.

TV Spielfilm wrote that “Jutta Speidel's sudden change from a neglected housewife to a self-confident squatter [comes across as quite old-fashioned]. In return, a Christmas feel-good happy ending is guaranteed. […] Conclusion: Maybe more fun with a glass of punch ”.
