action

The two sisters-in-law Karin and Philippa as well as Gerhard, a friend from their youth, are childless seniors who spend their retirement in their own garden in Essen instead of traveling through foreign countries. They don't feel like taking senior courses or Nordic walking . Because of their boredom, they are looking for a new challenge. After Philippa is enjoying her life as Leonie's godparent grandma, Gerhard and Karin also apply to an agency for loan grandparents.

Soon afterwards, they will have lively sponsored grandchildren to look after. There will soon be a bouncy castle in the garden of your own home and Lego blocks are scattered everywhere . Seniors, who are inexperienced in parenting, face a number of challenges, such as hyperactive siblings from blended families , overprotective helicopter parents and single mothers with their Tinder profiles. For the three it turns out that the voluntary family constellations and the emotional cohesion are more important than their own egoisms.

reception

Andreas Fischer wrote in the Weser Kurier that screenwriter Robert Löhr did not skimp on humor, at least in the first half of the film. It is a shame that the production by director Wolfgang Groos frayed quickly and conflicts all too readily dissolved into self-satisfaction. Groos works a lot with the frontal pedagogical humor club. The film always has its strongest moments when it becomes quiet and no longer revolves around its clichés, but rather observed exactly how it really is with getting older. Then he shows a society that could use rest and that knows it, but that does not allow anyone to rest. Not even the grandparents, who give the children what they do not get from their parents: serenity and an open ear.

Peter Osteried found on cineman.ch that grandchildren for beginners is a life-affirming, optimistic, inspiring film that postulates that it is never too late for a new beginning if you have enough courage. The conflicts in this film are very understandable, cross-sectional through all storylines and with all characters. They never seemed excessive or exhausted, but authentic. That is also what makes this likeable comedy so attractive, because you can find yourself in the characters.

Christian Klosz said on filmpluskritik.com that despite minor weaknesses, especially in the last third, the film had become an entertaining, entertaining and, for a long time, also funny comedy, which humorously addressed the topic of getting older and judged: “Nothing earth-moving, but in the best A film for young and old ".

Stefan Klug wrote on MOZ.de that this comedy skilfully targets the peculiarities of our society with its prejudices and condemnations, rigid thought patterns and supposedly correct attitudes. All would get their fat off equally.
