content

Jost's wife Maria recently passed away as a result of an illness. While sorting her estate, he and his son come across an electronic conversation, which is stored on Maria's notebook, between his wife and a stranger who goes by the name of Anni. The subject line of every email from the two women is “Maria to Callas”, which is derived from the mutual admiration of the two women for the singer Maria Callas .

He decides to continue the conversation and to take on the virtual personality of his deceased wife without telling "Anni" this. Through this he learns that Anni had to accept a similar loss a few years ago. He sets off and stays in the small hotel that Anni runs. Anni doesn't yet know that Jost is the person she thinks is Maria and with whom she communicates almost every day. After a while, Jost and Anni fall in love, which Annis emails to his late wife Maria confirm. Only later does he realize how wrong it was for him to spy on her via the emails and to use the information to his advantage.

Jost leaves again, Anni ceases all contact with Jost. However, both realize that they belong to each other and that their feelings did not result from the correspondence. While Jost is visiting an opera, Anni is on the way to his house and looks around there. Jost leaves the performance prematurely because the feelings for Anni and the memory of his deceased wife do not let go of him. When he arrives at his house, however, he only finds Anni's scarf, she is already on her way back. Jost goes back to the place where they got to know and love each other. They meet again on a staircase on the beach.

Reviews

"Psycho love story, implemented in an unconvincing television aesthetic, which notoriously under-challenges its remarkable actors as well as the audience."

“The film 'Maria an Callas' by Petra Katharina Wagner does exemplary mourning work. Everything that life has to offer in terms of quality is offered. [..] 'Maria an Callas' is inspired by the belief in a real life, which - despite all questions of truth - manifests itself primarily as good style. The right dishes, the right good air, the right preparation of fish, the right music on the right sound carrier (Callas on vinyl). [..] 'Maria an Callas' is German emotional cinema, powered by Brigitte or Petra or Für Sie (and him, if he is ready to show feelings). "

“Kitsch in a fairytale atmosphere [..], Petra K. Wagner filmed such a story for ARD. [..] Happy end? Clear. Ingredients until then: tears, curtained windows, blizzards, Maria Callas arias, beautiful dishes. [..] Pretty, entertaining, worth seeing. "
