history
Station history
On January 1, 1984, the day before RTL plus started broadcasting, the station ushered in the era of regular private television in Germany as part of the Ludwigshafen cable pilot project . At 9:58 a.m., the program company for cable and satellite broadcasting (PKS) went on the air from a basement studio in Ludwigshafen am Rhein . With the sentence: "Ladies and gentlemen, at this moment you are witnessing the start of the first private television broadcaster in the Federal Republic of Germany", Jürgen Doetz , the station's managing director at the time, greeted the presenter Irene Joest at 10:30 am the audience . This statement is only partially true: PKS was not the first German private television broadcaster, but “only” the first one founded in Germany. In 1954 Telesaar went on air in Saarland, which at that time did not yet belong to Germany, and was able to continue broadcasting for around a year after the incorporation of Saarland into the Federal Republic.
From 10:33 a.m., the fireworks music by Georg Friedrich Handel followed . The other program on the first day of broadcast was:
- 10:55 am: Wilderness Adventure , documentary series
- 11:42 a.m .: Hansel and Gretel , puppet film based on the fairy tale opera by Engelbert Humperdinck
- 12:50 p.m.: News ( FAZ )
- 1 p.m .: Solid Gold , music show
- 2:00 p.m .: Carousel of Life , cartoon
- 3:10 p.m .: Swan Lake , ballet by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky with Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev
- 4:55 p.m.: News (FAZ)
- 5:00 p.m .: Living with Wolves , documentary
- 6:25 p.m .: Die Fledermaus , operetta film based on Johann Strauss with Peter Alexander , Marianne Koch , Hans Moser and Marika Rökk
- 8:10 p.m.: News (FAZ)
- 8:15 pm: Matt Houston , crime series
- 9.45 p.m .: The Despicable One , feature film with Jean-Paul Belmondo
- 11:20 p.m .: Beethoven's 9th Symphony , conductor Herbert von Karajan , Berlin Philharmonic
- 0:25 am: Program preview
The PKS logo was a rotating globe with PKS written on it. At the beginning, the station could only be received by around 1200 cable households in the Ludwigshafen cable pilot project. With the start of the second cable pilot project in Munich on April 1, 1984, the program was also distributed via the European satellite ECS 1 . On January 1, 1985, the station was renamed from PKS to Sat.1 . Sat.1 has been broadcasting via the Astra position 19.2 ° East since December 8, 1989 .
On October 1, 1987, Sat.1 started as the second German television station, after RTL plus , a weekday breakfast television (Guten Morgen mit Sat.1) . On September 12, 1990, the Sat.1 broadcasting center in Mainz was inaugurated , from which it was broadcast until the Sat.1 media center in Berlin opened on August 30, 1999.
In January 1991, the test image that had been broadcast after the program ended, disappeared. The Sat.1 text was then sent in the program-free time. Sat.1 has been broadcasting a full 24-hour program since mid-1993.
Regional news programs under the title 17:30 Sat.1 are broadcast on weekdays at 5:30 p.m. in the states of Bremen , Lower Saxony , Hamburg , Schleswig-Holstein , North Rhine-Westphalia , Rhineland-Palatinate , Hesse and Bavaria .
In 1992, Sat.1 acquired the first exploitation rights to the Bundesliga on free TV, and the new football show was broadcast for the first time on August 14, 1992 - Sat.1 Bundesliga . Until 2003 the station held the rights.
In 1995, Sat.1 postponed the start of the main evening program by 15 minutes to 8:00 p.m. under the advertising slogan “Full hour, full program” and also had the following programs begin on the hour. Hence the supremacy should ARD - Tagesschau be broken, the end at 20:15 specified a fixed point in all other transmission schemes. After the ratings on Sat.1 had fallen significantly, the station returned to the old time schedule in 1997.
In 1996 there was a scandal : Margarethe Schreinemakers , who was in the crossfire of criticism for tax evasion , wanted to speak out on her own behalf in her program Schreinemakers Live . While the program was running, Sat.1 broke off the broadcast and Ulrich Meyer instead read a statement from the broadcaster on the incident.
On October 2, 2000 , Sat.1 merged organizationally with the television station ProSieben . ProSiebenSat.1 Media AG emerged from this merger .
On November 10, 2001, Sat.1 achieved the best audience rating to date with an average of 14.02 million viewers and a market share of 55.1 percent in the qualifying game for the 2002 World Cup between Ukraine and Germany.
On September 6, 2004, the transmitter switched off the VPS signal. From the end of February 2007, Sat.1 broadcast additional information on the current program via blucom .
On July 16, 2007 ProSiebenSat.1 Media AG announced drastic savings in the Sat.1 information area. Around 70 jobs should be cut at Sat.1 alone. On July 17, the programs Sat.1 at noon and Sat.1 in the evening no longer ran; the program reorganization began one day after the announcement. Finally, on August 31, 2007, the nightly news ceased.
On July 19, 2007, Sat.1 started broadcasting the 2007 Tour de France after the boycott of the stations Das Erste and ZDF . However, these broadcasts turned into a quota disaster, as the market shares were not above ten percent on any broadcast day. This meant that they were both well below the channel's average and well below the market shares of the regular afternoon program. From an economic point of view, too, this decision was a mistake. The advertising prices for the afternoon had to be reduced by 60 percent.
On November 13, 2008, ProSiebenSat.1 Media AG announced at a staff meeting at the Hilton Hotel in Berlin that it was moving its headquarters from Berlin to Unterföhring near Munich. This affected 350 editors and administrative staff. The departments of the marketer SevenOne Intermedia GmbH also moved to Unterföhring. ProSiebenSat.1 Media AG wanted to achieve further savings by shedding 225 jobs at Sat.1. At the same time, a change in the management became known. The previous Sat.1 boss Matthias Alberti switched to German Free TV Holding on January 1, 2009 and became managing director there alongside Andreas Bartl. Since January 1, 2009, his successor at Sat.1 has been Guido Bolten , the previous managing director of kabel eins , who left the station on February 1, 2010. Andreas Bartl, Executive Board member of ProSiebenSat.1 Media AG, took over management of the company at this point.
On January 20, 2009, there was the first strike by workers on German private television in Berlin. The reason for the employee meeting was the failed negotiations between Sat.1 and the employee representatives about a social plan . Around 90 percent of the more than 600 employees at the Sat.1 location in Berlin-Mitte take part in the 36-hour labor dispute that the German Association of Journalists (DJV) and ver.di called for .
Sat.1 has been broadcasting its program in HD on the Astra HD + platform since January 31, 2010 .
On May 19, 2012, the station broadcast the longest football broadcast in the station's history with over 13 hours of coverage from Munich . At the same time, the best audience rating was achieved in the final of the UEFA Champions League between FC Bayern Munich and FC Chelsea with an average of 16.77 million TV viewers and a market share of 55.3 percent. At its peak, 20.38 million viewers tuned in, so that the market share during the penalty shoot-out climbed to a record level of 70.1 percent.
Market shares

When developing the audience shares, it must be taken into account that they not only reflect the acceptance of the program, but v. a. In the early years, there was also limited availability, as the cable television networks were still being set up, a fee was charged for direct satellite reception in Germany and private television was only gradually permitted in the German-speaking area. In 1988 Sat.1 had a higher market share than RTL for the only time so far, and in 1994 its highest market share, partly because of the soccer programs broadcast at the time - Sat.1 Bundesliga . In the station ranking list, the station usually takes fourth place. Only in 1988 and 1995 did it climb to third place. In 2006, after three years of increasing ratings, Sat.1 fell below ten percent again.
On January 1, 2013, Sat.1 applied for a new license from the Medienanstalt Hamburg / Schleswig-Holstein and thus evaded the supervision of the Rhineland-Palatinate State Center for Media and Communication (LMK). The background to this should be the coupling of the license to the third-party provider News and Pictures . The LMK, the Hessian media authority LPR Hessen and the Rhineland-Palatinate media entrepreneur Josef Buchheit sued against this change of media authority, so that the LMK remains the responsible state media authority of SAT.1 until further notice.
The average age of the audience is 51 years (as of 2016).
Station logos
Sat.1 changed its logo for the first time in 1986. The flat, colored halo of rays introduced with the original version was arched into a "ball" for the first time and integrated into the lettering.
In 1996, the station's logo was revised for the second time. In contrast to previous campaigns, in which the ball was always in the foreground, the station put the entire logo in the foreground for the first time. The colored ball was replaced by a much smaller, simple, black ball. In addition, the logo has now been framed by an ellipse . Although the word Sat.1 was in the foreground, the ball was retained as the screen logo . However, its bright color was withdrawn and it was a simple dark gray, slightly transparent circle.
On September 1, 2001, Sat.1 presented itself with a revised design. Now the station showed not only the ball but also the bookmark as the screen logo. This continued the direction taken in 1996. The ball was now colorful again, similar to the first logo. The screen logo changed from the left to the right corner of the screen. On September 3, 2004, Sat.1 changed the station logo slightly. The colorful ball contained in the logo was again shown in one color, mostly in dark pink.
On 17 March 2008 a renewed found relaunch of the corporate design instead of the sender. Since then, Sat.1 has used the ball again as the sole station logo and new on-air elements. The permanent logo was visible on the left again. The font used has also been renewed. The SAT1DigitalSans , a modified version of the Digital Sans font , which was used until the redesign , has been replaced both in the station logo and in the display of program content on posters or in the on-air design. The font, reminiscent of a mixture of VAG Rundschrift and Arial Rounded , was called Sat1 Rounded .
The Sat.1 ball, which has been rotating clockwise since September 16, 2009, moved back to the right corner of the screen. In some cases, such as brief commercial breaks, the ball spun counterclockwise. Klavika was introduced as a new font .
On July 20, 2011, Sat.1 announced at a press conference that the station would receive a multicolored ball again in the course of August, but that a completely new design was not planned. It was then decided to revise the appearance. The new design, still with the Klavika Bold font , has been in use since August 16, 2011.
On October 12, 2016 the logo was revised again. Since then, the large areas of the ball have been colored again. The on-air corner logo remained unchanged in the SD version. At the same time, a new on-air design was introduced. Ridley Grotesk is used as the new font .

- Cable: analog, digital
- Satellite: digital
- IPTV
- DVB-T
Sat.1 is broadcast digitally via satellite and all German cable networks . The analog satellite broadcasting was switched off on April 30, 2012. With the introduction of DVB-T , the analog terrestrial broadcasting available regionally in some places was completely discontinued; the digital terrestrial broadcasting of the station takes place predominantly in the metropolitan areas. After years of negotiations with the cable network operators, an agreement was reached about digital distribution in the cable networks and so Sat.1 is now also fed into most digital cable networks. In Switzerland , Austria and Luxembourg the broadcaster broadcasts the German program, but Swiss and Austrian programs are included in the first two.
In the video center on the station's homepage, part of the program is also made available on the Internet. The self-produced series can be viewed there free of charge for seven days after the TV broadcast. After that they can be seen at maxdome.de for a fee . Sat.1 also puts the self-produced Tuesday films on the Internet free of charge for seven days.
Sat.1 HD
On 29 and 30 November 2004, "The Ring of the Nibelungen" for the first time a high-definition television with the two-part HDTV transmission, in addition to standard definition PAL , in simulcast performed procedures. This test should prove the high definition capability and future security for further transmissions. Further broadcasts in HD followed until the end of the test run in 2008.
Since January 31, 2010, the HD program on Sat.1 has been encrypted. The program can be received via satellite (SES Astra) on the pay-TV platform HD +, but since mid-2011 also via pay-TV offers from Kabel Deutschland, Kabel BW, Unitymedia and the IPTV offerings from Telekom Entertain and Vodafone TV . Since October 23, 2017 also in HD on Magine TV in the Comfort HD or Deluxe HD package.
From Good Friday to Easter Monday 2014 and Christmas 2014 as well as on the Day of German Unity 2015, the HD channels of ProSiebenSat.1 Media SE could be received unencrypted.
While the regional news programs were not initially broadcast on Sat.1 HD , from the end of 2013 the cable network began offering window programs in the HD version as well.
