ran is the brand name of the sports programs on the German television channels Sat.1 , kabel eins (since autumn 2009), Sat.1 Gold (April 2013), SIXX (June 2013), ProSieben Fun (June 2013) and ProSieben Maxx (April 2014) .

The following sports are currently shown under the “ran” brand: soccer , American football , basketball , tennis , boxing / kickboxing , extreme sports , surfing , eSports , wrestling , mixed martial arts and the DTM .

history

prehistory

In 1986, Sat.1 first showed Bundesliga soccer in its program. On the penultimate matchday of the 1985/1986 Bundesliga season, the game between leaders Werder Bremen and pursuers FC Bayern Munich was broadcast . Although at that time private television could not be received by many television viewers, the station achieved a good rate through broadcasts on big screens and in restaurants. That is why Sat.1 wanted to broadcast one game live per matchday of the Bundesliga in 1986. In 1988 they lost in the bidding war RTL plus and this showed the games under the title kick-off .

Start 1992

In 1992, the rights agency ISPR around Leo Kirch finally acquired the first exploitation rights to the Bundesliga in free TV for Sat.1 and on August 14, 1992 the new football show was broadcast for the first time. Reinhold Beckmann became the chief moderator . In the early days, the show received a lot of praise from the critics and achieved top ratings of up to eight million viewers.

Due to the many commercial breaks, however, the show had to take more criticism in the new millennium. In the late 1990s, there was also growing criticism that the station emphasized the show element of football too much. So Sat.1 always started its live broadcasts an hour before kick-off and during this time it broadcast shows and lots of advertising. In addition, cameras were now aimed at players' wives. What was initially celebrated as a welcome change and served a certain voyeurism of the audience, was later criticized as "unimportant" and "not serving football".

When the beginning of the program was postponed to 8:15 p.m. in 2001 in order to give the then ailing pay broadcaster Premiere a greater advantage in the exploitation of rights, the program attracted the displeasure of many fans. After a few weeks with desperate quotas, the start was finally brought forward again to 7:00 p.m.

End of ran 2003

Sat.1 paid up to 80 million euros annually for the Bundesliga rights , but was only able to refinance half of them. For this reason, the broadcaster withdrew from Bundesliga coverage in 2003, since then the Bundesliga has been presented again by the ARD Sportschau . Instead, Sat.1 acquired the free TV rights for the Champions League for three years up to and including the 2005/2006 season.

Football broadcasts after the broadcast ends

In 2006, Sat.1 broadcast the Saturday conference live on the first day of the new Bundesliga season in order to advertise the new pay channel Arena . However, the ratings remained below expectations, the broadcast only reached 2.6 million viewers and the station had to take criticism for sending too much advertising before and after the games.

From the 2006/2007 season, Sat.1 acquired the rights to the UEFA Cup from the quarter-finals. Since the 2007/2008 season, the station had the Champions League in its program again. However, the Champions League programs were no longer produced in-house, but were taken over from the pay-TV channel Premiere (now Sky Deutschland) as part of “Champions TV” . Both contracts expired at the end of the 2008/2009 season.

Sat.1 and Kabel 1 held both the free TV rights to the Champions League and the new UEFA Europa League , which replaced the UEFA Cup. These broadcasts have been shown again since 2009 under the label "ran", confirmed the then Sat.1 managing director Bolten. Ran has also been on the Internet again since mid-August 2009 . The website uses the content management system cmsWorks . In December 2009 it was announced that ran would also be available as a magazine from 2010. The magazine contained backgrounds, analyzes and portraits. The circulation was 180,000 copies. The first issue of the magazine was to appear eight times a year on February 10, 2010. On November 12, 2010 it was announced that the magazine would be discontinued due to insufficient sales. The last issue 06/2010 appeared on October 13, 2010, the next planned issue on November 17, 2010 was no longer published.

For the 2012/2013 season, Sat.1 handed over the rights to the Champions League to ZDF . However, the rights to the Europa League were retained. Up until the end of the 2014/15 season, one live game and the highlights were broadcast on the smaller Kabel 1 channel per game week. After that, the rights to the Europa League were acquired by Sport1 . Since 2012, Sat.1 has been broadcasting the Super Bowl , the final of the American football championship, which was broadcast by Sat.1 from 1999 to 2003 and, after losing the rights, from 2004 to 2011 in the first .

On April 24, 2013 it was announced that Sat.1 and Kabel 1 had acquired free TV rights to the U-21 European Football Championship and would broadcast them from June 6, 2013. The moderator Andrea Kaiser and the commentators Hansi Küpper and Holger Pfandt reported from Israel . But after the bad results of the German team, the German participation was only broadcast on Kabel 1. In 2004, Sat.1 already had the rights to the U-21 European Football Championship 2004 and thus achieved a market share of up to 16.5 percent in the target group.

On December 18, 2015, it was announced that ProSiebenSat.1 and the sports rights agency of ARD and ZDF SportA had reached an agreement regarding the sublicensing of six games of the 2016 European Football Championship . These were the parallel games on the last day of the group phase, which were broadcast on Sat.1. On May 9, 2016, it was also announced that the broadcasting rights of the Copa América Centenario had been acquired. Twelve preliminary round games of the tournament were broadcast on Kabel 1 and seven knockout games on Sat.1. In addition, all 32 games of the tournament were available via live stream on ran.de.

Since the 2015 NFL season, ProSieben Maxx has broadcast 2 games from the NFL every Sunday, and even 3 on some Sundays. In addition, all playoff games are broadcast alternately on ProSieben Maxx and Sat.1. On January 13, 2017, on the occasion of the 2016/17 playoffs, the broadcast had a live audience in the studio for the first time since the broadcast began. Jan Stecker , Roman Motzkus, Uwe Morawe and Patrick Esume each form the commentator and expert duo. After the 2016/17 season, Frank Buschmann left the moderation team. Netman Icke Dommisch has also been an integral part of the program since the first broadcast.

For the end of 2014 they planned their own sports channel called ran +. However, the corresponding plans were later put on hold.

From the 2021/22 Bundesliga season onwards, ran will show nine games on free TV. These are the four relegation games, the Friday games on the first, 17th and 18th match days, the DFL Supercup and the opening game of the 2nd Bundesliga .
