The Telekom Cup (2009: T-Home Cup 2010 to 2012: ! Liga total Cup ) is an unofficial football warm-up tournament in Germany, in which four Bundesliga clubs in the knock-out system are facing. It has been taking place shortly before the Bundesliga season starts since 2009. In the 2016/17 season and the 2018/19 season it took place during the winter break due to scheduling difficulties. The record winner is FC Bayern Munich with five titles, the club is also the only one that has participated in all editions so far.

history

After the official DFL League Cup was held for the last time in 2007, no tournament was initially planned for the beginning of the season. In 2008, the double winner FC Bayern Munich and cup finalist Borussia Dortmund revived the Supercup on their own , which was held under the name T-Home Supercup . Before the 2009/10 season , the main sponsor Deutsche Telekom launched a preparatory tournament called the T-Home Cup, similar to the league cup , in which four top Bundesliga clubs face each other in a tournament mode. A comparable tournament called the Fuji Cup had already been held from 1986 to 1996 . In 2010, 2011 and 2012 the tournament operated under the name LIGA total! Cup . The tournament has been called the Telekom Cup since 2013 .

Although it is an unofficial invitation tournament, the tournament receives a lot of media attention. All four games will be broadcast live on television and other media will also report in detail on the tournament. The Telekom Cup was considered the “first title of the season” and a “yardstick” for the performance of the teams involved shortly before the start of the season or the second half of the season. In the early days, the media incorrectly referred to the Telekom Cup as the successor to the official league cup.

From 2015 the tournament was shortened to one day, the mode was adjusted. In the 2016/17 season and the 2018/19 season it took place during the winter break due to scheduling difficulties.

mode

The tournament took place on two consecutive days up to and including 2014. On the first day, the two semi-finals were played one after the other in the same stadium. On the following day, the losers of the semi-finals first faced each other in a game for third place, followed immediately by the final, which the two winners contested. The playing time was two times 30 minutes. A penalty shoot-out took place immediately after a tie after 60 minutes.

In 2015 the mode was modified. The knockout mode remained the same, but the tournament was shortened to one day. The playing time was reduced to 45 minutes to enable four games in one day.
