Player career

Club career

Beginning in São Paulo

Breno had played in the youth department of São Paulo FC for four years before moving up to the professional team in 2007 at the age of 18. In his first season for the Brazilian champions of the previous year, he played a significant role in defending the championship title.

"At the moment he is the best defender Brazil has to offer in its own country," said the kicker sports magazine about the defender who was awarded the Silver Ball as the best player by the Brazilian trade magazine " Placar " at the end of the 2007 championship season in Brazil was awarded on his position. With the youth team of the same club, he had already won the U-17 state championship in São Paulo in 2006 . Due to his good performance, well-known clubs from Europe - such as AC Florence , Juventus Turin , Real Madrid and FC Bayern Munich  - soon became aware of Breno. Several newspapers reported that the well advanced negotiations with Real Madrid failed because the club asked the Brazilian for a bone test . Those responsible doubted the age of the player because he had an unusually strong physique for his stated age. Breno is said to have broken off the negotiations.

Change to Europe

Instead, Breno signed a contract with FC Bayern Munich that ran until June 30, 2012. The CEO of FC Bayern, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge , called Breno “an obligation for the future”.

The young Brazilian played his first competitive game on March 12, 2008 in the second leg of the second leg of the UEFA Cup when he lost 2-1 at home to RSC Anderlecht . Breno made his debut in the Bundesliga on May 4, 2008 (31st match day) when he came on for Daniel Van Buyten in the 73rd minute in the goalless draw in the away game against VfL Wolfsburg . By the end of 2009, Breno had played seven Bundesliga, five Champions League games and one DFB Cup game.

To collect more match practice, Breno joined by any business placed during the winter break lending from January 2010 to the end of the season together with Andreas Ottl to Bundesliga rivals 1. FC Nuremberg . There he was able to show consistently good performances, but only made seven appearances, as he tore a cruciate ligament on March 7, 2010 (25th matchday) in a 3-2 home win against Bayer 04 Leverkusen after a foul by Stefan Reinartz and so it was canceled for the rest of the season.

Breno returned to Bayern Munich for the 2010/11 season . Before his first competitive game, however, a third operation on his knee was necessary in September. After surviving an injury, he came on November 14, 2010 (12th matchday) in the 3-0 win in the home game against 1. FC Nürnberg after the half-time break for the ailing Martín Demichelis . On the following match day, in a 1-1 home game against Bayer 04 Leverkusen, he completed 90 minutes for the first time. Five more followed. In the second half of the season he barely got over short missions. On matchday 25 he was sent off the field after he was back in the starting lineup for the first time in a long time. After that, he only had a six-minute mission. Bayern finished third in the Bundesliga this season.

At the beginning of the 2011/12 season, the now 21-year-old Breno was told on September 19 that he would have to undergo a third operation because of his knee. Obviously frustrated by this situation, he set fire to his rented house in the Munich suburb of Grünwald under the influence of alcohol and medication . He was initially taken into custody, but Bavaria provided bail at the beginning of October which enabled his temporary release. Nevertheless, he did not come to any more games at Bayern that did not extend his contract, which was running out at the end of the season. A change offer by the Italian first division club Lazio Rome , announced by the press, did not materialize, because in July 2012 he was sentenced to three years and nine months in prison.

From August 19, 2013 until his release from prison in December of that year, Breno was already on day release . As part of a rehabilitation measure , he worked in the office of the youth management of Bavaria and in the coaching staff of the second team .

Return to Brazil

While in custody, his former club, São Paulo FC, had informative links with Breno at the helm of President Juvenal Juvêncio, a former police investigator, current politician and lawyer. The Brazilian authorities hoped that Breno could be released earlier by the German judiciary with good leadership and with a contract guarantee from his former club. On December 20, 2012, São Paulo FC surprised the public with the announcement that they had unilaterally re-signed Breno until 2015 and that they had registered this with the Brazilian association CBF. The club's management hoped that this would save him a prison sentence. However, those responsible at the prison denied that Breno had ever received an offer from São Paulo.

After his release from prison on December 14, 2014, he returned to São Paulo on December 18, 2014, where he returned to training with São Paulo FC from January 2015. Confident that he would find his way back to his old form, his contract, which expired in July 2015, was extended for two more years to 2017, although he had not yet played a competitive game. After more than four years, Breno played a football game again - in the city derby on August 9, 2015 (17th matchday) in a 2-1 win in the home game against Corinthians São Paulo with a substitution for Húdson Rodrigues dos Santos in the 59th minute. On September 20, 2015 (27th matchday) Breno scored a goal again in a 2-1 defeat in the away game against Avaí FC after more than eight years with the goal to make it 1-1 in the 43rd minute. After that, he only got a few assignments in various competitions at São Paulo . On May 17, 2017, the CR Vasco da Gama announced that he would loan Breno from São Paulo until December 2017. After the end of the season it became known that Breno was permanently joining Vasco. There he received a three-year contract.

National team

Breno already played in Brazilian youth national teams. With the appointment to the selection team for the Olympic soccer tournament in Beijing on July 8th, 2008 by national coach Carlos Dunga , Breno completed two games in the U-23 selection team before the tournament. The international test matches were won 3-0 on July 28, 2008 in Singapore (against Singapore) and on August 1, 2008 in Hanoi (against Vietnam). At the Olympic football tournament, Breno played six games as the team captain of the Seleção Restritiva until he won the bronze medal .

At the end of January 2011, Breno was appointed to the senior squad for the first time for the international match on February 9, 2011 against France . Because of his solid technique and robust tackle behavior, Breno is often compared to the Brazilian national player and former FC Bayern player Lúcio . Giovane Élber , who, as a player observer, drew the attention of FC Bayern Munich to Breno, described him as “strong at the head, robust, fast, with both feet” .

Conviction for arson

On the night of September 20, 2011, Breno's rented villa in the Munich suburb of Grünwald , which he lived in completely with his wife Renata, their two children and their son, burned down . The player, who was alone in the house at the time, was slightly injured and was then taken to a hospital. The trigger of the fire was initially unclear. On suspicion of serious arson Breno was on 24 September 2011 in custody and taken to the prison Munich spent. On October 6, he was released from custody on bail of EUR 500,000. On April 11, 2012, the Munich I public prosecutor's office brought charges against Breno on suspicion of serious arson. Immediately before the start of the process, Giovane Élber criticized his former club's lack of integration efforts in the past.

On July 4, 2012, Breno was sentenced to three years and nine months in prison for aggravated arson. At the same time, the Munich public prosecutor began investigations against the football club on suspicion of possible violations of the Medicines Act . Breno had stated that he regularly took sleeping pills from an unlocked medicine cabinet. His application for an appeal was rejected by the Federal Court of Justice in Karlsruhe in January 2013, making the judgment against him final. Breno's sentence was suspended on December 20, 2014, as by that time he had already served two-thirds of his prison term.
