Beginnings in Poland

Jakub Błaszczykowski began his football career at the age of eight with his brother Dawid, who was three years older, at Raków Częstochowa . He was discovered by the scouts of the Polish record champions and first division club Górnik Zabrze , where he moved in autumn 2002. At Górnik Zabrze, however, he could not prevail and was released back to Częstochowa in 2003 to local rivals KS Częstochowa in the fourth Polish league. His breakthrough came in 2005 when he was hired by the then reigning Polish champion Wisła Krakow during the winter break of 2004/05 and established a regular position there. In the same game year he was Polish champion with Wisła Krakau.

Career highlight at Borussia Dortmund

In July 2007 he moved to Borussia Dortmund . Błaszczykowski was considered one of the most hopeful Polish football talents at the time. Zbigniew Boniek called him "little Figo ". With Borussia Dortmund he was in the DFB Cup final in Berlin on April 19, 2008 , which the team lost 2-1 to Bayern Munich after extra time . He scored his first competitive goal for Borussia Dortmund on April 25, 2008 in the game against Eintracht Frankfurt to make it 1-1. After finishing sixth in 2009 and fifth in 2010 , Błaszczykowski became German champions with Borussia Dortmund in 2011 and 2012 . On May 12, 2012, he played again with Borussia Dortmund in the DFB-Pokal final in Berlin and this time won 5-2 against Bayern Munich.

On the 18th matchday of the 2013/14 season he suffered a cruciate ligament rupture in his right knee in the home game against FC Augsburg after getting stuck on the grass. He made his comeback on December 9, 2014 in a 1-1 draw in the Champions League game against RSC Anderlecht , when he came on for Shinji Kagawa in the 84th minute .

Błaszczykowski's jersey with the number 16 bore his nickname Cuba , the Polish diminutive of Jakub , until the 2011/12 season . Since the 2012/13 season , his full name Błaszczykowski has been printed at his request . During the summer break of 2012, Błaszczykowski extended his contract with Borussia Dortmund by three years until 2016; in June 2013 again for two years until June 30, 2018.

Via Florence to Wolfsburg

At the end of the summer transfer period on August 31, 2015, Błaszczykowski was loaned to the Italian Fiorentina for the 2015/16 season.

After the end of the loan at Fiorentina and the subsequent European Championship in France Błaszczykowski did not return more to Borussia Dortmund back but joined the season 2016/17 to VfL Wolfsburg , where he received a up to 30 June 2019 dated three-year contract. He made his debut for the Wolves on August 27, 2016 (1st matchday) in a 2-0 away win against FC Augsburg. He scored his first Bundesliga goal for VfL Wolfsburg on October 15, 2017 (8th matchday) in a 2-2 draw in the away game against Bayer 04 Leverkusen with the goal in the 69th minute. In both seasons Błaszczykowski had to compete with VfL Wolfsburg in the relegation relegation, both against Eintracht Braunschweig and against Holstein Kiel the class was held.

After Błaszczykowski had only made a brief appearance in the Bundesliga under Bruno Labbadia in the first half of the 2018/19 season , he agreed with the club to terminate his contract on January 3, 2019.

Błaszczykowski holds the record for the highest substitution rate in the Bundesliga (119 substitutions out of 235 appearances).

Return to Wisła Krakow

On February 7, 2019, it became public that Błaszczykowski had signed a six-month contract with the Polish first division club Wisła Krakau and thus returned to his ex-club. The contract guaranteed him a monthly salary of only 500 złoty (the equivalent of around 116 euros) and is part of a financial support from Błaszczykowski for the club, which has run into financial difficulties. The midfielder donates his entire salary to local orphanages in the form of tickets. In the summer of 2019, the midfielder's contract was extended to June 2020.

As part of the global COVID-19 pandemic , the Pole announced at the beginning of April 2020 that he and two business partners wanted to acquire the club's football department in order to save them from financial ruin.

Two years later he was nominated for the 2008 European Championship by Poland's new coach, Leo Beenhakker . Shortly before the first group game against Germany , Błaszczykowski injured his thigh and had to leave; Łukasz Piszczek was nominated for him .

At the beginning of 2011, Błaszczykowski took over the captain's armband for the first time and also led the Polish team into the 2012 European Championship in their own country as captain . On June 12, 2012 he scored his first goal at an international tournament there with the goal for the 1-1 final in the game against Russia . Until 2014, Błaszczykowski was the national team captain. Then he was absent for over a year due to an injury and only returned in the second half of qualifying for the 2016 European Football Championship in France. It was only in preparation for the European Championship that he played a full game in the national jersey again and was then part of a Polish squad for the third time . In the opening game against Northern Ireland he provided the template for the winning goal scorer Arkadiusz Milik and he was also in the starting line-up against Germany . In the last group game against Ukraine , he scored the 1-0 winner shortly after being substituted on at half-time, making him the first Polish two-time European goalscorer. Poland reached the round of 16 as second in the group and met Switzerland there . They won the game on penalties, with Błaszczykowski converting the fourth of five penalties. The quarter-finals against Portugal were again decided on penalties. Błaszczykowski missed the decisive penalty and Portugal advanced to the semi-finals.
