There he played in the junior youth team from 2001 to 2003 and in the years 2004 and 2005 in the pure youth team.

Time at Cerezo Osaka

In 2006 Kagawa finally got a professional contract with Cerezo Osaka , who had their game operations at that time in the J. League Division 1, offered. This season he was in the club's professional squad, but was mainly used in the club's youth team and had to wait until 2007 for his first professional appearance. After the team's relegation to Division 2 , Kagawa came to the men's team of the big city club in his first season on 35 league appearances, in which he scored five goals.

After a rather mediocre fifth place in the 2007 season-end table, the team made it to fourth place in 2008 and just missed the relegation round for promotion to the top division. The committed offensive midfielder again played 35 championship games this season, but was able to show a significantly better goal rate than last year: he scored 16 goals over the entire season. The 2009 season was very successful for both Cerezo Osaka and Shinji Kagawa himself. The team, led by the Brazilian Levir Culpi , was two points behind Vegalta Sendai in second place in the final table and thus rose directly to the top Japanese league. In 44 missions Kagawa came to a record of 122 shots on goal, with which he scored 27 goals and was top scorer of the J. League Division 2 .

With the rise, his goal danger did not decrease. In Division 1 he came in eleven games on seven goals and one assist.

Move to Germany

In the winter of the 2009/2010 season, Kagawa was invited by Thomas Kroth's agency to take part in tests at Schalke, Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen. He signed a three-year contract with Borussia Dortmund that will come into effect on July 1, 2010. Instead of a transfer fee, the Borussia transferred a training allowance of € 350,000 to Cerezo Osaka. In his first Europa League game on August 19, 2010, he scored his first two competitive goals for Dortmund against the Azerbaijani club FK Qarabağ Ağdam . On September 11, 2010 (3rd matchday) he scored his first Bundesliga goal in the game against VfL Wolfsburg to make it 2-0. The following day he scored the first two goals for BVB in the Revierderby at FC Schalke 04 , which Dortmund won 3-1 in the end. In the 2010/11 season he was German champion with BVB , although he had not played the entire second half of the season because of a metatarsal fracture. Almost a year later, on the 32nd matchday of the 2011/12 season , Kagawa defended the 2011 title with Borussia Dortmund and was German champion for the second time in his career. He also won the DFB Cup with BVB on May 12, 2012 , scoring 1-0 in the final. His contract with BVB ran until June 30, 2013. The club wanted to extend the contract after the season, but Kagawa turned down offers for a contract extension.

After Kagawa had initially canceled the 2010 World Cup , the Japanese Football Association announced on May 17, 2010 that he would take part in the preparation as a reservist. In fact, he was not part of the Japanese national team at the World Cup.

Kagawa took part in the 2011 Asian Cup with Japan in January 2011 . He injured himself in the semi-final game against South Korea and immediately returned to Dortmund.
