The J.League Division 2 2004 was the sixth season of the Japanese J.League Division 2 . Twelve clubs took part in it. The season began on March 13th and ended on November 27th, 2004, the relegation games played for the first time with the table sixteenth in Division 1 2004 were played on December 4th and 12th.
Champion and thus promoted to J.League Division 1 2005 was Kawasaki Frontale . In addition to Kawasaki, the runner-up Ōmiya Ardija also rose. The third-placed Avispa Fukuoka failed in the relegation in two games to Kashiwa Reysol and remained in the league.

The season was played in a double double round tournament, the clubs played four times against each other, twice at home and twice away; a total of 44 games per team resulted. There were three points for a win and one point for a draw. The table was created according to the following criteria:

- Results of the games among themselves
- Decision game or coin toss
The two clubs with the most points were promoted to the J.League Division 1 2005 at the end of the season . The table third played with the table sixteenth of the J.League Division 1 2004 in a two-way round for another place in Division 1. In the event of a tie after the end of these two games, the away goals rule was applied; these no decision would take was one extension , which from now through the abolition of the rule-goal Golden would completely played, and if necessary, a penalty shoot- performed.

A total of twelve teams took part in the season. Here the previous year's champion Albirex Niigata and the runner-up Sanfrecce Hiroshima rose to Division 1 2004 ; the team from Hiroshima returned directly to this division after leaving Division 1 at the end of the 2002 season, Albirex, on the other hand, reached a highest for six consecutive years in the second division - five of them in Division 2 - for the first time in its history Japanese football division.
The two promoted teams were replaced by the worst two teams in Division 1 in 2003 . Both the table penultimate Vegalta Sendai and bottom end Kyōto Purple Sanga returned to Division 2 after two years together in Division 1.

- Vegalta Sendai played a home game at Miyagi Stadium in Rifu , Miyagi.
- Ventforet Kofu played a home game at Matsumotodaira Football Stadium in Matsumoto , Nagano .
- Yokohama FC played one home game each at Yokohama International Stadium , Yumenoshima Stadium in Tokyo and Edogawa Athletic Stadium in Tokyo.

Relegation
In the relegation for a place in the J.League Division 1 for the coming season, which was held for the first time, Avispa Fukuoka, third in the table, met sixteenth in the overall table in Division 1 2004, Kashiwa Reysol . The two games were altogether a one-sided affair; after goals from Harutaka Ōno and Tatsuya Yazawa for Reysol in the first leg held in Fukuoka, Yūji Unozawa and Yasuhiro Hato made it clear that the favorites were not relegated a week later in front of their home crowd.
