The 1998 Japan Football League was the seventh and final season of the Japan Football League , a league at the second level of the Japanese football league hierarchy. A total of sixteen clubs took part in it. The season started on April 5 and ended on November 1, 1998.

Tokyo Gas was champion last season, but since the club was not an extraordinary member of the J. League and therefore not eligible for promotion, only the runner-up Kawasaki Frontale could participate in the relegation playoffs to J. League Division 1 in 1999 . Kawasaki failed here in the qualification to Avispa Fukuoka and was therefore incorporated into the newly founded J. League Division 2 in 1999 , as did nine other clubs . The remaining teams were assigned to the "new" Japan Football League , a likewise newly founded division on the third level of the Japanese league pyramid.

mode

The teams played a simple double round tournament , so that each club had to play a total of 30 games. Similar to the mode of the J. League 1998 there were no draws; are level after 90 minutes of the playing time was about twice fifteen minutes extended , the golden goal rule was used. If it was still a draw after that, the winner of the game was determined by a penalty shoot-out .

There were three points for a win after regular time and two points for a win in extra time. The winner on penalties received a counter. The table was created according to the following criteria:

  1. Number of points scored
  2. Goal difference
  3. Goals scored
  4. Results of the games among themselves
  5. Decision game or coin toss

The two best teams qualified for the relegation playoffs , provided they had the status of a so-called associate member of the J. League. Due to the dissolution of the league after the season and the establishment of the J. League Division 2 and the "new" Japan Football League , there were no relegations to the regional leagues . The division of the existing teams between the two new leagues was based on sporting and economic criteria.

Attendees

A total of sixteen teams took part in the competition. Again there was in the previous year with the master Consadole Sapporo only one promoted to the J. League in 1998 , since the runner-up Tokyo Gas had no extraordinary J. League membership .

At the end of the 1997 season, two teams withdrew again from the league, which meant there was no relegated sport. Both Fukushima FC and Seinō Transportation SC disbanded after their withdrawal. Since there were three vacancies in the division due to promotion and retreat , the team from Kokushikan University was invited in addition to the two best teams in the regional league finals , Sony Sendai FC and Albirex Niigata , at the request of the Japanese University Football Association .

In addition, another club changed its name; the NTT Kantō company team renamed itself Ōmiya Ardija .

Qualification for the J. League relegation

For the 1999 season, the J. League Division 2 was introduced with a total of ten teams. In addition to eight clubs in the Japan Football League , the field should be reinforced by one or two participants from the J. League . To determine these teams put the J. League relegation playoffs , which had to be contested by the worst four teams of the combined final tables of the 1997 and 1998 seasons. These were Avispa Fukuoka , Consadole Sapporo , JEF United Ichihara and Vissel Kobe . Since the mode stipulated that extraordinary members should also be given a chance of promotion on the two promotion places, the playoffs played in the knockout system and two -legged friendship were preceded by a single elimination game between JFL runner-up Kawasaki Frontale and Avispa Fukuoka, whose winners took part in the playoffs, while the defeated team was classified in the J. League Division 2 in 1999 .

Avispa Fukuoka was able to prevail in an exciting game with a golden goal from Fernando just 3-2 against Kawasaki Frontale and qualify for the main round.
