The 1997 Japan Football League was the sixth season of the Japan Football League , a league at the second level of the Japanese football league hierarchy. A total of sixteen clubs took part in it. The season started on April 20 and ended on November 2, 1997.

Champion and promoted to the J. League 1998 was Consadole Sapporo . The runner-up FC Tokyo was not an extraordinary member of the J. League and therefore not eligible for promotion. There was no relegation in the regional league , but both Fukushima FC and Seino Transportation withdrew from the league at the end of the season and then broke up.

mode

The teams played a simple double round tournament , so that each club had to play a total of 30 games. As in the 1997 J. League mode , there were no draws; are level after 90 minutes of the playing time was about twice fifteen minutes extended , the golden goal rule was used. If it was still a draw after that, the winner of the game was determined by a penalty shoot-out .

There were three points for a win after regular time and two points for a win in extra time. The winner on penalties received a counter. The table was created according to the following criteria:

1. Number of points scored
2. Goal difference
3. Goals scored
4. Results of the games among themselves
5. Decision game or coin toss

The two best teams rose to the J. League in 1998 , provided they had the status of a so-called Associate Member of the J. League. Depending on the promotion, up to two teams were relegated to the corresponding regional league .

Attendees

A total of sixteen teams took part in the competition. For the first time there was here in the previous year with the runner-up Vissel Kobe only one climber in the J. League 1997 , since Master Honda Motors had no extraordinary J. League membership .

At the end of the 1996 season, two teams also withdrew from the league, which meant that there was no relegated sport. Both Cosmo Oil Yokkaichi and Tosu Futures broke up after their withdrawal, but the futures were replaced at the same location by the new Sagan Tosu association . In addition to the new team from Tosu , the two best teams in the regional league finals , Jatco FC and Prima Ham FC Tsuchiura , which renamed itself to Mito HollyHock after promotion , completed the field of participants.

In addition, another club changed its name; the Fujitsu SC corporate team was renamed Kawasaki Frontale .
