The clubs played a double round tournament ; thus there were a total of 42 games per team. There were three points for a win and one point for a draw. The table was created according to the following criteria:

  1. Number of points scored
  2. Goal difference
  3. Goals scored
  4. Results of the games among themselves
  5. Decision game or coin toss

The two clubs with the most points were promoted directly to the 2015 J1 League at the end of the season .

The third climber was determined by a tournament in the knockout system over two rounds between the teams in places 3 to 6. Here the third played against the sixth, the fourth competed against the fifth. The higher ranked team enjoyed home rights. In the event of a tie after 90 minutes, the better-ranked club advanced one round. The final took place in the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo , the winner was promoted to Division 1.

The bottom of the table was relegated directly to the J3 League 2015 , the bottom of the table played in two relegation games against the runner-up in the J3 League 2014 to stay in class.

Attendees

A total of 22 teams took part in the season. At the end of the 2013 season left champions Gamba Osaka and runner- Vissel Kobe the league after just one year back towards Division 1. Accompanied were the two clubs by the winner of the promotion playoff Tokushima Vortis that against JEF United Ichihara Chiba and Kyoto Sanga prevailed and after nine years Division 2 rose to the House of Lords for the first time.

The three promoted teams were replaced by the three relegated teams from J.League Division 1 2013 , Shonan Bellmare , Júbilo Iwata and Ōita Trinita . Júbilo Iwata ended a total of twenty years membership in Division 1; the other two teams, however, returned to J2 after only one year in the House of Lords.

At the bottom of the table, the bottom of the table Gainare Tottori had to relegate against the runner-up of the Japan Football League 2013 , Kamatamare Sanuki (champions AC Nagano Parceiro only got a license for the newly founded J3 League ). After a 1-1 draw in Sanuki, Gainare lost the second leg in front of their own audience 1-0, which was equivalent to relegation to the J3 League after three years in Division 2. Accordingly, Kamatamare made it to the second level of the Japanese league pyramid for the first time in the club's history.

    Promotion Playoffs

The teams in places 3 to 6 played the third promoted team in the 2015 J1 League in three play-off games . In the semifinals, the third placed against the sixth placed and the fourth against the fifth. The winners of these games contested the final against each other in a neutral position, the winner rose to the top. A special feature of the mode was that in the event of a tie, the team with the better placement from the regular season would always advance.

    Semifinals

Since the fifth-placed Giravanz Kitakyūshū received no license for the J1 League, he was denied participation in the playoffs. This led to a modification of the mode; the third placed JEF United Ichihara Chiba was set directly for the final, while the fourth Júbilo Iwata and the sixth Montedio Yamagata determined the second participant in an elimination game.

The semifinals turned out to be an exciting affair. Júbilos Ryōhei Yamazaki was able to equalize the opening goal scored by Diego mid-half with the break whistle . In the second half, however, the team from Iwata failed to add the second goal despite their superiority; this retaliated when Norihiro Yamagishi scored the winning goal for Yamagata in the second minute of stoppage time.
