The J2 League 2016 was the eighteenth season of the second division of the Japanese J. League and the second under the name J2 League . 22 clubs took part in it. The season started on February 28, 2016 and ended on November 20, 2016.
Consadole Sapporo became the master . In addition to Sapporo, runner-up Shimizu S-Pulse also rose directly, and Cerezo Osaka , fourth in the table, came out on top in the promotion playoffs between the teams in positions 3 to 6 . Giravanz Kitakyūshū rose as bottom of the table directly to the J3 League 2017 , the table penultimate branch Kanazawa held the class with two wins against J3 League 2016 runner-up Tochigi SC in relegation .
Due to a strong series of earthquakes in Kumamoto Prefecture and the resulting damage, Roasso Kumamoto was forced to suspend the game between April 15 and May 15, 2016. The canceled games were made up in the course of the season.
mode
The clubs played a double round tournament ; thus there were a total of 42 games per team. There were three points for a win and one point for a draw. The table was created according to the following criteria:
- Number of points scored
- Goal difference
- Goals scored
- Results of the games among themselves
- Decision game or coin toss
The two clubs with the most points were promoted directly to the 2017 J1 League at the end of the season .
The third climber was determined by a tournament in the knockout system over two rounds between the teams in places 3 to 6. Here the third played against the sixth, the fourth competed against the fifth. The higher ranked team enjoyed home rights. In the event of a tie after 90 minutes, the better-ranked club advanced one round. The final took place due to the construction work around the Olympic Stadium Tokyo in the home stadium of the better-placed club in the final, the winner rose to the J1 League.
The bottom of the table was relegated directly to the J3 League 2017 , the bottom of the table played in two relegation games against the runner-up of the J3 League 2016 to stay in class.
Attendees
At the end of the previous season , Master Ōmiya Ardija made a direct return to the Japanese upper house. The Saitama club was accompanied by runner-up Júbilo Iwata , who returned to the J1 League after two years , and promotion playoff winner Avispa Fukuoka , who returned to the top division after a four-year absence. The three newcomers were replaced by the three relegated teams from the 2015 J1 League , Matsumoto Yamaga , Montedio Yamagata and Shimizu S-Pulse . Matsumoto and Montedio returned to the second division after only one year J1, while Shimizu had to go into the second division for the first time in his club's history.
At the bottom of the table, two clubs were relegated to the J3 League for the first time . Tochigi SC left the J2 as the bottom of the table directly and thus ended a seven-year league membership. They were accompanied by Ōita Trinita , who lost to Machida Zelvia in the relegation against J3 League 2015 runner-up . After relegation from J. League Division 1 in 2013 , the team from the north of Kyūshū had to go down a class again after only two years. Conversely, Machida Zelvia managed to return to second class after three years. They were accompanied by J3 champion Renofa Yamaguchi , who, as a previous year climber in the J3 League, managed to march straight through to J2.
