The FC Machida Zelvia ( Japanese FC 町 田 ゼ ル ビ ア, Efu Shī Machida Zerubia ) is a Japanese football club from Machida in Tokyo Prefecture . The club currently plays in the J2 League .

The team gave itself the nickname Zelvia in 2009 and is a combination of the Japanese Zelkove (the tree of the city of Machida) and the English . Term salvia (English sage ).

history

The city of Machida is also known as the " Brazil of Tokyo", as there is an incomparable football culture. Some of the best-known players in the J. League come from the Machida FC football school founded in 1977 . In order to be able to keep these talents, a top team was founded in 1989. This went on to the Athletic Club Machida in 2003 and made the leap into the Kantō League in 2005 , until in 2008 the promotion to the Japan Football League was achieved.

The goal of the club to be included in the J. League Division 2 was quickly announced . However, at that time neither the sporting performance nor the average number of viewers of around 3,000 viewers per game was sufficient.

After the engagement of Naoki Soma (player during the 1998 World Cup ) as head coach and some players known from the J. League, sporting success came in 2010, culminating in the victory against arch rivals Tokyo Verdy in the Emperor's Cup found, however, the loss to Albirex Niigata ended the club's cup ambitions. Despite the expansion of the stadium, it still did not meet the requirements of the J. League and was renovated again by early 2011.

Ranko Popovic, former coach of the J.League veteran Ōita Trinita , was hired as head coach , and with third place they got the desired place in the second Japanese professional league for the 2012 season. After only one season, however, Zelvia rose from bottom of the table back in the Japan Football League . For the 2014 season , the club was one of the founding members of the J3 League . At the end of the 2015 season , the team reached second place, which entitles them to participate in the relegation games against the penultimate of the 2015 J2 League . There opponent Ōita Trinita could be defeated, which was equivalent to returning to the J2 League.

Stadion

The " Municipal Athletics Stadium Machida" ( Japanese町 田 市立 陸上 競技場, Machida-shiritsu rijujō kyōgijō , English Machida Municipal Athletic Stadium ), also named after the Nozuta district in which it stands, Nozuta Stadium ( Nozuta-kyōgijō ) was prepared for the ascent since 2009. A lighting system was installed to enable games at night and the audience capacity was increased from 6,200. The capacity of 10,000 seats required for the J2 League was finally achieved after an expansion for the 2013 season.
