Renofa Yamaguchi FC ( Japanese レ ノ フ ァ 山口 FC Renofa Yamaguchi FC ) is a Japanese football club from Yamaguchi , the capital of the prefecture of the same name . He has played in the J2 League since 2016 .
history
The beginnings of the club go back to the "Teachers Football Club of Yamaguchi Prefecture" ( 山口 県 サ ッ カ ー 教員 団 , Yamaguchi-ken Sakkā Kyōindan ), which was founded in 1949. In February 2006, at the instigation of the Yamaguchi Prefecture Football Association, a new club with the aim of placing a team from the prefecture in the J. League was set up on the basis of the teachers' football club . Around the same time, a public call to find a name for the new club was launched, from which the name Renofa Yamaguchi FC a short time later resulted.
Soon after it was founded, the team's athletic performance improved continuously. While the old teachers' soccer club could only achieve middle to back places in the Chūgoku regional league, Renofa soon played regularly for the championship. The first regional league title was won in 2008; in the subsequent round of promotion to the Japan Football League you reached the final round, but finished it last, so that promotion was missed. A second championship followed in 2010.
Three years later, promotion to the JFL was achieved. Renofa benefited twice from favorable circumstances. The club missed the regional league championship clearly, but qualified for the promotion round due to the victory in the national amateur cup , the Shakaijin Cup . There they were eliminated in the preliminary round; However, since ten of the eighteen JFL clubs switched to the newly founded J3 League for the following season , the club was approved as one of a total of four successors to the JFL.
Renofa immediately took fourth place in the new league. Since the so-called 100 Year Plan status had been held since mid-2013 , i.e. fulfilled the necessary criteria for admission to the professional league, and fourth place was just as sporty for promotion, the club was admitted to the J3 League. Just one year later, the championship marched through to the J2 League .
