Mito Hollyhock , official spelling Mito HollyHock ( Japanese 水 戸 ホ ー リ ー ホ ッ ク , Mito Hōrīhokku ) is a Japanese football club from Mito , Ibaraki Prefecture . He has played in the J2 League continuously since the 2000 season .
Since it is traditionally a weak team, the team has developed an outstanding defensive style of play, which is often referred to as "Mito-nachio" (based on the Catenaccio tactic). This is also a play on words with the local specialty Mito Natto . In the meantime, Mito also has qualities on the offensive in order to be more attractive for sponsors.
history
The club was founded in 1990 as Prima Aseno FC by workers from the Prima Ham food company in Tsuchiura . In 1996, the club changed its name to Prima Ham FC Tsuchiura and rose to the then second-rate Japan Football League for the first time. Prima Ham merged with FC Mito, which was founded in 1994, after the company no longer wanted to continue its financial support. The new club was named Mito HollyHock before the start of the 1997 season.
Mito's request to play in the newly formed J. League Division 2 was initially rejected in 1999 due to inconsistent financial support and a lack of fan base. A year later, after a third place in the Japan Football League and the increased regional support in 2000, the promotion to the second division, to which the club has been a member, succeeded.
Stadion
The club plays its home games at K's denki Stadium Mito (ケ ー ズ デ ン キ ス タ ジ ア ム 水 戸) in Mito in the prefecture of Ibaraki . The stadium, owned by the City of Mito, has a capacity of 12,000 spectators.
