Gert Engels
Gert Engels (born April 26, 1957 in Düren ) is a German soccer coach and former player.
Player career
He began his career as a player in 1965 with SG Düren 99 and was with Borussia Mönchengladbach from 1975 to 1978 . After two years at SV Baesweiler 09 , he returned to SG Düren 99 in 1980, where he ended his career in 1990. In Mönchengladbach he was part of the team that became German champions in 1976 and 1977 . However, he did not appear in the Bundesliga.
Coaching career
His first coaching position was with the youth team at SG Düren 99. In 1990 he moved to Japan and worked there as a coach. His first stop there was in Ibaraki Prefecture at Prima Aseno FC, the club that later mutated into Mito HollyHock . Before joining the Yokohama Wing coaching staff on February 1, 1993, he was also a soccer teacher at Takegawa Dai Ni High School in Akashi .
Shortly before the wing was converted to the new club Yokohama F. Marinos in 1999 due to financial problems , he was able to enjoy his first appointment as head coach in the J-League (in office September 1 to December 31, 1998), a function which he then completed at short notice for JEF United Ichihara Chiba (February 1 to June 19, 1999) and then for Kyoto Purple Sanga (February 1, 2001 to June 30, 2003). In Kyoto , he immediately led the club that had just been relegated back to the top division and in 2002 to victory in the Japanese cup competition, the Kaiser Cup , when the favored Kashima Antlers were defeated 2-1 after extra time in the final. After three years with the club, however, he was dismissed at the beginning of the following season after a false start.
Since February 1, 2004 he has been assistant trainer at the Urawa Red Diamonds , first under Guido Buchwald and then as assistant to Holger Osieck . On March 16, 2008, he took over the position of head coach and replaced Holger Osieck. In early December 2008 he was released from the Urawa Red Diamonds.
In October 2011, Engels took over from the Dutchman Maart Nooij as Mozambique's national coach , from which he resigned in June 2013.
From January 17, 2018, Engels will be assistant trainer at Vissel Kobe in Japan, where Lukas Podolski also played.
Since March 2017 he has been working in the Middle East, e.g. B. in Ramallah at the Palestinian Football Academy.
Others
Engels runs the soccer school “Soccer life” in Japan and in his hometown. For Japanese kickers and teams, Engels offers training camps in Düren and the rest of Germany. He also places players in clubs in the region. The players he recruits for his soccer school mostly play in the region around Düren and, in addition to an active soccer career, often go on to study .
