Holger Osieck (* 31 August 1948 in Homberg ) is a German football coach and functionary of FIFA . Most recently, he coached the Australian national football team from August 2010 to October 2013 .
Player career
Holger Osieck began his football career at the age of ten at FC Schalke 04 . He stayed there for seven years, then played for Eintracht Gelsenkirchen , SSV Hagen , 1. FC Mülheim , 1. FC Bocholt , Vancouver Whitecaps and Rot-Weiß Oberhausen .
Coaching career
After studying history at the Ruhr University in Bochum , he decided to pursue a career as a coach at the age of 22, acquired licenses and in 1976, at the age of 28, passed the soccer teacher test at the Cologne Sports University . He wrote his licensing work there on the history of FC Schalke 04. Two years later he started in Canada , where he had also played, as an assistant coach at the national association.
In 1979 he became a DFB youth coach. From 1987 until the World Cup in 1990 he was the coach of the German team - as assistant to Franz Beckenbauer , who did not have a coaching license . After winning the World Cup, he was initially the youth coach at FC Schalke 04 and then followed Beckenbauer as the second man to the French first division club Olympique Marseille .
At the beginning of the 1991/92 season he became head coach at Bundesliga club VfL Bochum . The first season he finished with the team around national player Dariusz Wosz with the second worst goal difference of the then 20 league participants in 15th place. In the following season Bochum was bottom of the table after the 12th matchday after five defeats in a row, and Osieck was replaced by Jürgen Gelsdorf . This brought the Bochumers to 16th place, but could not prevent their first Bundesliga descent.
Osieck now trained Fenerbahçe Istanbul and won the trophy of the Turkish Sports Journalists Association with the club . From 1995 to 1996 he made his first stop at the Japanese first division club Urawa Red Diamonds . With the club, he finished fifth and sixth in both seasons.
From 1997 to 1998 he worked again in Turkey , where he won the Turkish Cup with Kocaelispor after final games against Trabzonspor in 1996/97 .
From September 29, 1998 to September 2, 2003, Osieck looked after the Canadian national team , with whom he surprisingly won the North and Central American Championship, the Gold Cup , in February 2000 with a 2-0 victory over Colombia .
From May 1, 2004, he worked at the world association FIFA in Zurich as head of the technical development department. In July 2004, he served as assistant coach of the national coach Jurgen Klinsmann in conversation, but said in the short term from. The post finally went to Joachim Löw .
In 2007 he took over the coaching position for the second time with the Urawa Red Diamonds from Japan, which had previously been coached by Guido Buchwald . Here he celebrated his greatest success as a club coach on November 14, 2007. After a 1-1 draw in the first leg, the Diamonds defeated Iranian team Sepahan Isfahan 2-0 and won the Asian Champions League . After two defeats at the start of the season, he was released on March 16, 2008 at the 2007 runners-up.
On August 11, 2010, he was introduced as the national coach of Australia. In 2011 he reached the final of the Asian Cup with Australia , in which it lost 1-0 to Japan afterwards. On March 30, the Australian national team defeated Germany in Mönchengladbach 2-1 under his leadership.
In June 2013 , Australia's national team qualified for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil as runners-up behind Japan, followed by Jordan, Oman and Iraq. After two 6-0 defeats in friendly matches against Brazil and France , Osieck was sacked on October 12, 2013.
Private
The PE teacher is remarried and has a son and a daughter. His son is President of the Canadian Football Association of British Columbia .
