John Herdman (* 19th July 1975 in Consett , County Durham , England ) is an English football - coach , who is currently the Canadian national soccer team trains.

From 2006 to 2011 he coached the New Zealand women's national soccer team and the U-20 team with which he took part in the 2008 U-20 Women's World Cup. In 2007 and 2010 his team won the Oceania Women's Championship and thus qualified for the 2007 and 2011 World Championships , in which New Zealand was eliminated in the preliminary round. He also led the New Zealand team to the Olympic Games in Beijing , but retired there after a draw against Japan and two defeats against Norway and the USA in the preliminary round.

After the 2011 World Cup, he took over the Canadian women's national soccer team . His first success with the new team was winning the gold medal at the 2011 Pan American Games in the final against Brazil . He was then able to use the home advantage at the CONCACAF qualifying tournament in Vancouver for the Olympic Games in London and reached the Olympic football tournament in his country of birth. There he and his team reached the bronze medal game, which Canada won 1-0 against France . He was able to repeat the success with the Canadians in 2016 , where they won the bronze medal against hosts Brazil.

On January 9, 2018, he resigned from his position as national coach for the women of Canada and took over as coach of the Canadian men's national team.
