Foolad Mobarekeh Sepahan Isfahan ( Persian باشگاه فوتبال سپاهان) is an Iranian football club from Isfahan .

history

In 1944, Shahin Isfahan was founded as a subsidiary of Shahin Tehran . In 1967 there were dissonances between the Tehran and Isfahan associations, so that it was decided in Isfahan to become independent from the Tehran mother association. Therefore the name was changed to Sepahan Isfahan.

The club played in Isfahan's regional league until it was taken over by the local cement factory in 1993 and promoted to the Azadegan League . They played there until the 1999/2000 season, before the local steel mill, the Mobarakeh Steel Company , acquired the club and changed the name to Foolad Mobarekeh Sepahan Isfahan .

In the 2002/2003 season, Sepahan Isfahan was the first football club not from Tehran to win the Iranian championship . Just one year later in the 2003/2004 season, the club won the Iranian Cup (Hazfi Cup) . In the 2005/2006 and 2006/2007 seasons, two more cup wins followed.

Sepahan Isfahan was also successful in the AFC Champions League . In the 2007 AFC Champions League , the club made it to the final. The club lost in two games 1: 1 and 0: 2 to the Urawa Red Diamonds from Japan . In the AFC Champions League 2008 , the club was eliminated in the group stage.

In the 2007/2008 season, the club lost the Iranian championship to Persepolis Tehran on the last day of the match . After losing the championship and the poor performance in the AFC Champions League 2008 , the club split from coach Jorvan Vieira . In the 2008/09 season the club was coached by Engin Fırat .

In July 2009 Amir Ghalenoei was hired as a coach, who was Iranian champion with Sepahan Isfahan in the 2009/10 season and 2010/11. For the 2011/12 season, after the departure of Amir Ghalenoei, Luka Bonačić was signed as the new coach, but he was replaced by his Croatian compatriot Zlatko Kranjčar in the autumn of the same season . With him, the club was able to celebrate winning the championship again.
