mode
The season was played in a double double round tournament, the clubs played four times against each other, twice at home and twice away; By increasing the field of participants to 13 clubs, there were a total of 48 games per team. There were three points for a win and one point for a draw. The table was created according to the following criteria:
- Number of points scored
- Goal difference
- Goals scored
- Results of the games among themselves
- Decision game or coin toss
The two clubs with the most points rose to the J.League Division 1 2007 at the end of the season . The third-placed player played with the sixteenth of the J.League Division 1 2006 in a two- legged game for another place in Division 1. In the event of a tie after the end of these two games, the away goals rule was applied; should this not result in a decision either, extra time and, if necessary, a penalty shoot- out was carried out.
Attendees
A total of thirteen teams took part in the season, one more than the year before. At the end of the preseason, three clubs were promoted to Division 1 in 2006 . Master Kyōto Purple Sanga ended a two-year league membership with the second promotion to Division 1. Vice- champion Avispa Fukuoka managed to return to J1 after four years after the team had failed in the relegation the year before . In those same qualifying games for Japan's top division, third-placed Ventforet Kofu prevailed against Division 1-sixteenth Kashiwa Reysol , mainly thanks to his striker Baré , who with his seven goals in both games, six of them in the second leg alone, for Ventforets first participation at the highest level of the league pyramid after twelve years of the second division (the first five as a member of the Japan Football League ) was responsible.
In addition to Kashiwa, who returned to the second level after eleven years, two other clubs were relegated, which, like Reysol, had previously spent a long time in the first class. For the first time since the 1977 season , Tokyo Verdy had to return to League 2 in 1969 , when Verdy Kawasaki was the first J.League title holder ; Due to the victory in the Kaiser Cup in 2004 , the penultimate of the J1 2005 was the first second division team in history to be eligible to start in the 2006 AFC Champions League . Division 1 bottom Vissel Kobe also played at the highest level for nine years before relegation, the Japan Football League in 1996 was the club's last second division season.
As a new club, the league took on Ehime FC . The team, based in the prefectural capital of Matsuyama , became champions of the Japan Football League in 2005 and was the first club of the second generation of J.League members to play in the amateur leagues when the league was founded in the 1990s.
