The Hiratsuka Kyōgijō ( Jap. 平塚競技場 , "Stadium Hiratsuka"), after naming rights sales currently Shonan BMW Stadium Hiratsuka ( Shonan BMWスタジアム平塚 ), is a football stadium in the Japanese city of Hiratsuka , Kanagawa Prefecture . It is the main venue of the Shonan Bellmare football club ( J1 League ).

history

The scoreboard of the stadium

The stadium opened in March 1987. Originally the facility only had a main grandstand, the other sides consisted of grass-covered walls on which the spectators could sit. However, due to the inclusion of the Shonan Bellmare football club in the J. League for the 1994 season, these walls were replaced by another grandstand on the back straight and standing terraces in the corners at short notice before the start of the season , in order to meet the requirements of the league. After these renovations, the stadium had a capacity of 18,500 spectators, further renovations for the 2014 season reduced the capacity to 15,200 seats.

Since December 2010 the venue has had a video scoreboard. The LED- based system manufactured by Mitsubishi Electric is HD capable, has an area of approx. 175 m² (height 9.84 m, width 17.76 m) and was built behind the guest curve.

The venue is currently mainly used for soccer games. At the beginning of the 2012 season, the group of BMW car dealerships based in the Shōnan region acquired the naming rights . The original contract initially ran for three years and has since been extended.
