The J2 League 2017 was the nineteenth season of the second division of the Japanese J. League and the third under the name J2 League . 22 clubs took part in it. The season started on February 26, 2017 and ended on November 19, 2017; the two rounds of the promotion playoffs followed on November 26 and December 3, 2017.
Shonan Bellmare became the master . In addition to the team from Hiratsuka , Kanagawa , runner-up V-Varen Nagasaki also rose directly, and third-placed Nagoya Grampus prevailed in the promotion playoffs between the teams in places 3 to 6 . Thespakusatsu Gunma rose from bottom of the table directly in the J3 League 2018 ; the table penultimate Roasso Kumamoto was allowed to remain in the league despite reaching the penultimate place, as Blaublitz Akita , champion of the J3 League 2017 , did not have the necessary license for the J2 League.
mode
The clubs played a double round tournament ; thus there were a total of 42 games per team. There were three points for a win and one point for a draw. The table was created according to the following criteria:
- Number of points scored
- Goal difference
- Goals scored
- Results of the games among themselves
- Decision game or coin toss
The two clubs with the most points went straight to the 2018 J1 League at the end of the season .
The third climber was determined by a tournament in the knockout system over two rounds between the teams in places 3 to 6. Here the third played against the sixth, the fourth competed against the fifth. The higher ranked team enjoyed home rights. In the event of a tie after 90 minutes, the better-ranked club advanced one round. The final took place due to the construction work around the Olympic Stadium Tokyo in the home stadium of the better-placed club in the final, the winner rose to the J1 League.
The original plan stipulated that the two bottom of the table should be relegated directly to the J3 League 2018 , the relegation games played in previous years between the bottom of the table and the runner-up of the J3 League 2017 were canceled. However, since only one of the two best teams in the J3 League 2017 received a J2 license, the relegation was reduced by one team.
Attendees
At the end of the previous season , Master Consadole Sapporo managed to return to the Japanese upper house of football after five years. The club from the north of Japan was accompanied by second-placed Shimizu S-Pulse , who returned to the J1 League after just one year , and the winner of the promotion playoffs , Cerezo Osaka , who was last in the top Japanese division in the 2014 season . The three newcomers were replaced by the three relegated members from the J1 League 2016 , Nagoya Grampus , Shonan Bellmare and Avispa Fukuoka . Nagoya played second class for the first time since the J. League was founded; most recently the club was still active as Toyota Motors in the Japan Soccer League 1989/90 on the second level of the league pyramid. Avispa Fukuoka ended his fourth membership in the J1 League after just one year, while Shonan Bellmare returned to the J2 League for the fourth time after two seasons.
At the bottom of the table Giravanz Kitakyūshū left as the bottom of the table on a direct route to J2 and thus ended a seven-year league membership. The team from the north of Kyūshū will be replaced by the J3 League 2016 champion Ōita Trinita , who is a few kilometers further east and made the direct return to J2. Zweigen Kanazawa , penultimate of the J2 League 2016, on the other hand, was able to assert itself in the relegation games against the runner-up of the J3 League 2016, Tochigi SC , and thus remained in the league.
