Masami Ihara ( Japanese 井 原 正 巳 , Ihara Masami ; born September 18, 1967 in Minakuchi , now Kōka , Shiga ) is a former Japanese football player and coach. With 122 appearances, he was the Japanese national record player. He was replaced by Yasuhito Endo on October 16, 2012 as the record holder.

Life

Ihara went to Nissan Motor FC, now known as Yokohama Marinos , after graduating from Tsukuba University in Tsukuba , Ibaraki Prefecture , and fought his way through the youth teams until he became the team's key player. He became such an important player for his club that many fans called him Mister Marinos . He formed the backbone of the team and also helped to integrate many young talents into the team, such as Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi and Shunsuke Nakamura .

Career

Masami Ihara was one of the best Japanese football players in the 1990s and captained the Japanese national team for about a decade. At the 1998 World Cup , Ihara's experience in Japan's first World Cup was crucial. Together with his teammates Yutaka Akita, Naoki Soma and Akira Narahashi, he was the backbone of the team. He wasn't the fastest, but his strengths were elsewhere. His physical condition and the ability to read the game brought great benefits to the Japanese team. He was also strong at the head and a great leader and was therefore highly praised by the Japanese Football Association. After he left the Yokohama Marinos , he played one more season with Júbilo Iwata and then moved to the Urawa Reds for two more years before finally ending his career and becoming a coach, first as assistant coach in 2009 and 2013 at Kashiwa Reysol .
