The J. League Cup in 2017 , officially because of a sponsorship agreement with the pastry maker Yamazaki Biscuits for a brand of the same 2017 J. League Cup YBC Levain called, was the 25th edition of the J. League Cup , the highest football - League Cup Competition in Japan . It started with the first group matches on March 15, 2017 and ended with the final on November 4, 2017, which, as in the previous year, was played at Saitama Stadium 2002 , the home stadium of the Urawa Red Diamonds . In the final Cerezo Osaka and Kawasaki Frontale faced each other, here the team from Osaka won their first league cup with a 2-0 success.
For the first time, goal judges were used in all games of the League Cup .
Format and schedule
All teams of the J1 League 2017 took part in the competition. Kashima Antlers , Urawa Red Diamonds , Kawasaki Frontale and, after successfully completing the playoff round, Gamba Osaka only intervened in the quarter-finals of the competition due to their qualification for the group stage of the 2017 AFC Champions League .
By qualifying Gambas for the Champions League group stage, fourteen teams took part in the group stage of the J. League Cup. These were divided into two groups of seven teams each, in which each team played once against each other team; three of the six games per team took place on their own pitch. The two group winners reached the quarter-finals directly, the teams in places 2 and 3 in each group played a qualifying round in a two-way round.
The games of the quarter-finals and the rest of the tournament tree were drawn after all participants had been determined. Both the quarter-finals and the semifinals were played in a two-legged manner. The final took place on November 4, 2017 at Saitama Stadium in 2002 .

In the group stage, each team plays once against all other teams in its group. There are three points for a win and one point for a draw. If there is a tie at the end of the group phase, the goal difference and the goals scored count first, then the direct comparison, the fair play score and the lottery decide (in this order).

Knockout phase
For the first time, a qualifying round took place before the quarter-finals, in which the second and third placed from each group took part. The winners of the cross-matched matches advanced to the quarter-finals, in which the four teams that had qualified for the group stage of the AFC Champions League 2017 also intervened in the competition.
All games except the final were played back and forth. In the event of a tie between two and two legs , the away goal rule initially applied ; if the goals scored away from home were also the same, there was a 30-minute extra time and, if necessary, a penalty shoot-out . The final itself was a single game that took place at Saitama Stadium in 2002 .
