Hajime Hosogai ( Japanese 細 貝 萌 Hosogai Hajime ) (born June 10, 1986 in Maebashi , Gunma ) is a Japanese football player in the position of defensive midfielder and central defender who will play for Bangkok United from 2020 .

Club career

Career start in Maebashi

His active club career as a football player began Hosogai when he was accepted into the youth department ( FC Maebashi Junior Youth , FC 前 橋 ジ ュ ニ ア ユ ー ス ) of his home club in 1999 and stayed there until 2001. This was followed by his admission to the Maebashi Ikuei High School ( 前 橋 育 英 高校 ), which has produced a large number of J.League 1 and 2 players. He attended this until 2004 and was trained in their soccer field. He went the same way that the later two-time national player Takeshi Aoki went shortly before, before he moved to the Kashima Antlers and became an important pillar there. After graduating from high school, Hosogai made it into the professional squad of the Urawa Red Diamonds in February 2005 , which by then has been back in the J. League Division 1 , the top division in Japanese football , for several years . To his professional league debut for the Japanese first division club from Urawa-ku , a district of Saitama , who played in red , he came on April 9, 2005 in a 1-1 home draw against Gamba Osaka , when he played in the 81st minute for the more experienced Tadaaki Hirakawa came on the lawn. After a long break, Hosogai came on two more short assignments in November 2005, the longer of which lasted almost half an hour. With the team, he was Japanese runner-up that season and also won the 2005 cup . He was also successful with the team in the subsequent Supercup , which was played in February 2006. After Hosogai was already used in the cup final, he was also used by coach Guido Buchwald in the Supercup game, which was won 3-1 over Gamba Osaka.

The success of the Urawa Red Diamonds continues

After only three league appearances in 2005 but great successes, the young defensive player lacked the necessary punch in the following game year 2006 , although he only made two appearances (a 2-0 away defeat against JEF United Ichihara Chiba in May 2006 and a 3-0 home win over Ventforet Kofu in November 2006) in Japan's top soccer division. For the strong playing team it was enough at the end of the 2006 season for the championship title, which they won with a lead of five points over the closest opponent Kawasaki Frontale . The team was again successful in the Kaiser Cup and won the competition in 2006 after 2005 . In the subsequent Supercup of the game year, however, the Urawa Red Diamonds had to admit defeat to Gamba Osaka, who clearly won the match 4-0. Due to the success in the league, the team was automatically qualified for the group stage of the AFC Champions League 2007 , where the team clearly prevailed from the beginning and finally made it to the final of the competition . There the Iranian club Sepahan Isfahan was dispatched with a total score of 3: 1 and the Urawa Red Diamonds subsequently won the Asian Champions League for the first time in their club's history. Hosogai was also used in the Champions League by coach Holger Osieck during this time .

Within the league, the trained defensive midfielder made a total of eight missions in the 2007 season , in which, however, he again remained goalless. Nevertheless, it was enough for the team in the end for the runner-up title, which they achieved with a deficit of two points on the Kashima Antlers and thus qualified for the AFC Champions League again. There the team entered the quarter-finals , where they prevailed with a total score of 4: 3 against Al Qadsia Kuwait , but in the subsequent semifinals against the eventual Champions League winner Gamba Osaka with a total score of 2: 4 from home and away lost. Before that, however, the team made third place at the 2007 FIFA Club World Cup after losing just 1-0 to AC Milan in the semi-finals , but instead the game for third place after extra time on penalties against Tunisian club Étoile Sportive du Sahel won. Also in the J. League of the 2008 season it was largely positive for Hosogai.

Breakthrough as a professional player

So he made the long-awaited breakthrough and made a total of 28 appearances in the league, in which he scored two goals. He scored his first goal on October 26, 2008 in a 1-0 away win over Albirex Niigata , when he contributed the winning goal in the 80th minute of the game. The second goal he succeeded in the 6-1 away defeat on December 6, 2008 against Yokohama F. Marinos , when he scored the 1: 2 connection goal, which should subsequently prove to be insignificant due to the size of the defeat. In the league, however, it was only enough for a seventh place, which was still ahead of the reigning Champions League winner Gamba Osaka.

In the following season in 2009 to Hosogai established more than one of the leaders in the team and was already wearing it frequently next to the multiple international Keita Suzuki , the captain loop of the team. In the league, the then 23-year-old made 31 of the 34 possible league appearances, scored as many goals as in the previous season and came up with two assists. With the team, he was again unable to match the successes of recent years in the final ranking and at the end of the season was only in sixth place in the table and was 14 points behind the champions, the Kashima Antlers. In the 2010 season , the team, which was now trained by Volker Finke , sagged further, where it only brought it to tenth place in the table and was already a big deficit on master Nagoya Grampus . Hosogai himself had a record of 28 league games this season, in which he scored one goal and prepared another three for his teammates. After he was shown seven yellow cards in league games in the 2009 game , this number increased to a total of eight in 2010, although he was not sent off a single time in a total of 98 league appearances, which in turn speaks for his defensive qualities.

Transfer to Germany

Because of these achievements, Hosogai was also appointed to the squad of the Japanese national team that year , where he was also observed by international scouts. Although he was still a member of the Urawa Red Diamonds at the time, he signed a contract with the German Bundesliga club Bayer 04 Leverkusen over the Christmas holidays of 2010, dated June 30, 2013 . Hosogai, who at that time still took part with his team in the 2010 Kaiser Cup and made it to the semi-finals there, moved to Germany at the beginning of 2011, although he was awarded with immediate effect to the German second division club FC Augsburg . His loan contract there ran until June 30, 2012. Immediately after the loan move to Augsburg , Hosogai began his trip to Qatar , where he participated with the Japanese national team in the 2011 Asian Cup and was therefore unable to participate in the second half of the season. He made his debut at 2-0 on matchday 23 against 1860 Munich when he came on for Michael Thurk in the 67th minute .

For the 2012/13 season Hosogai returned to Leverkusen. On May 21, 2013, he signed a four-year contract with Hertha BSC for the 2013/14 season.

Loan to Turkey

On August 26, 2015, Hosogai was loaned to Bursaspor in the Turkish Süper Lig until the end of the 2015/16 season.

Change to Stuttgart

On July 25, 2016, Hosogai moved to VfB Stuttgart .

Change back home

On March 24, 2017, Hosogai switched to Kashiwa Reysol .

Change to Thailand

At the beginning of December 2018, Hosogai moved to the Thai League in Thailand for the Thai champions Buriram United . With the club, he was runner-up behind Chiangrai United at the end of the 2019 season . After 25 games for Buriram, he moved on loan to league rivals Bangkok United in Bangkok for the 2020 season .

National team career

After Hosogai was already active in several youth national teams of Japan, taking with him the U-23 team of his home country , among other things at the football tournament of the 2006 Asian Games in part and was with the same team and the tournament of Toulon of 2008 and the soccer tournament of the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing in action. There he was used in two group games in group B , but retired with the team at an early stage as bottom group from the current competition. Then it was not until 2010 before the Japanese Football Association became aware of the defensive talent again. Due to the performance that Hosogai made in the league, he was brought into the senior national squad of his home country by the interim coach of the Japanese national team Hiromi Hara , who actually acts as the technical director of the national team but had to step in as a replacement at short notice.

There, Hosogai played the friendlies against Paraguay (1-0) and against Guatemala (2-1) over the full duration of the match. Then Hosogai was used by the new national coach Alberto Zaccheroni in the historic 1-0 victory over the national team of Argentina . At the end of December he was appointed to the Japanese squad for the 2011 Asian Football Championship .
