The Buriram United FC ( Thai : สโมสร ฟุตบอล บุรีรัมย์ ยูไนเต็ด ) is a professional football club from the Thai town of Buriram . The club plays in the highest Thai league, the Thai League .
The club was founded in 1970 under the name FC Provincial Electricity (PEA FC) and was initially based in Bangkok and later in the province of Ayutthaya . The association's namesake and sponsor was the same-named state energy supplier Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA).
In 2009, the politician Newin Chidchob took over the association and moved its headquarters to his home province. Since then he has also been president of the association. It was initially renamed FC Buriram PEA , in 2012 it was given its current name. Since then, Buriram has developed into the most successful soccer club in Thailand. He was seven times champion, three times cup and league cup winner and reached the quarter-finals of the Asian Champions League in 2013 . The home games have been played in the Chang Arena since 2011 . The stadium is also known as Thunder Castle .
Club history
Beginning and first successes
The association was founded in 1970 as a works team for the state power supplier PEA. The first successes came in 1998 with winning the third division, the Khôr Royal Cup . The club rose to the Thailand Division 1 League . In 2002/03, the club finished third in the second division. In the relegation to the Thai League, they lost to FC Thailand Tobacco Monopoly in the end , after a return match with 0: 1. A year later, with space, at the end of the 2003/04 season, he was promoted to the Thai League. As a climber you could surprisingly win the runner-up at the end of your first Premier League season. Reaching the runner-up position entitles the club to participate in the AFC Champions League . It was the first time that the club took part in an international competition. However, the club was excluded from the competition. In the following two seasons, 2006 and 2007, the PEA was only 10th and 8th at the end of the season.
The first championship
In the past, the club did not have a permanent home stadium and, due to the changing locations, did not have a large fan base. However, this was gradually built up with the move to Ayutthaya . The residents of the city took the club more and more than theirs. This was particularly noticeable in the 2008 season, when the number of viewers increased. Perhaps one reason was that the club had a more than good season, which surprisingly ended with the championship. At the end of the season they faced the defending champions Chonburi FC .
A new era
Before the start of the 2009 season, there were disagreements between the fans and their club. First of all, it was said in the room that the club would change its name to FC Ayutthaya . What the fans of the club were very happy about. This would create an even closer bond with the city and fans. Winning the championship entitles the club to qualify for the Asian Champions League. In the end, this was probably the reason why the club did not rename itself to FC Ayutthaya . From the point of view of marketing, the owner, namesake and sponsor of the association certainly had a legitimate interest not to change the name. In addition, another change of location of the association was considered. This upset the supporters of the club even more. In the end, the club stayed in Ayutthaya and the stadium was renovated. Despite everything, there was an adaptation of the club name. This also went hand in hand with a new club crest. The club no longer called itself by its full name Provincial Electricity Authority Football Club , but simply FC PEA .
In qualifying for the AFC Champions League 2009 , the PEA met the Singapore Armed Forces . In only one game it was a question of getting into the next qualifying round of the competition. Already in the 6th minute the PEA went 1-0 through Apipu Suntornpanavej . After the Armed Forces equalized in the 29th minute by Kenji Arai, no more goals were scored and the game went into overtime. There it was Therdsak Chaiman , who brought his club to victory road with a penalty kick. The PEA lost the game 1: 4 in the end. Due to the defeat, the club only qualified for the AFC Cup . There he met Binh Duong , Home United and Club Valencia in the group stage . Until the last day of the match, the club still had a chance to advance. In the last game of the group, it was the club itself to advance to the next round. Against Home United they lost 3-1 and then eliminated. Even in the league, the PEA had problems getting into gear. During the summer break, the club was only 12th and was threatened with relegation. In May 2009 the long-time coach Prapol Pongpanich was relieved of his office. After the poor results in the first half of the season, the pressure from the fan base became too great. Prapol is now the team manager of the team. His successor on the position of head coach was Thongsuk Sampahungsith. The club finished the 2009 season in ninth place.
Move to Buriram
In December 2009 it was announced that the Buriram- based politician Newin Chidchob will take over the club. Previously he tried unsuccessfully to take over the clubs FC TOT and FC Royal Thai Army . Newin relocated the club to Buriram and named it Buriram PEA Football Club . Pongphan Wongsuwan was signed as a coach . Since 1998 he was the responsible coach of FC TOT. As the new star of the team, Suchao Nuchnum was signed a short time later . Suchao had already played five years under Pongphan at FC TOT.
The 2011 season ended with a triple: winning the championship in the Thai Premier League, Thai FA Cup and Thai League Cup.
With the start of the 2012 season, the club was renamed Buriram United Football Club . The 2012 season ended the club fourth and again won the Thai FA Cup and Thai League Cup. In the group stage of the AFC Champions League 2012 , however, the club was eliminated last.
In the 2013 season Buriram became champions again, winning the FA Cup, the Thai League Cup and the Kor Royal Cup . In the AFC Champions League, the club was eliminated in the quarter-finals against Esteghlal FC from Iran.
In the 2014 season, Buriram was again champion under the new coach Alexandre Gama. In 2015 they won the championship, the FA Cup and the Kor Royal Cup .
