Modibo Maïga (born September 3, 1987 in Bamako ) is a Malian football player on the position of a striker and winger . He has been a national team player in his home country since 2007 .

Club career

Career start at home and move to Morocco

Modibo Maïga was born on September 3, 1987 in the Malian capital Bamako and began his club career at the local club AS Bamako . From this he came in 2000 to the youth division of Stade Malien , one of the two big clubs (alongside Djoliba AC ) from Mali. He is said to have made his debut in Malian elite there at the age of 15 before moving to Morocco in 2004 , where he was signed by the working class Raja Casablanca , one of the most popular and successful clubs in the country. In his first year he was used in 22 of the total of 30 league games and at the end of the season he was in second place in the table, two points behind champions AS FAR . This qualified the team for the subsequent CAF Champions League 2005 , in which Raja Casablanca was only eliminated from the current tournament in the semifinals against Étoile Sportive du Sahel . In the Arab Champions League of the 2005/06 season, for which the working-class club had also qualified, the team made it to the finals, where it was victorious against the Egyptian representative ENPPI Club with a total score of 3: 1 on both legs and won this title for the first time in the club's history. In the league events of the Moroccan first class, it was enough for the club in 2005/06 only for a fourth place in the table; Maïga scored ten goals in 25 league appearances. In the CAF Champions League 2006 he was eliminated with the team in the second round against JS Kabylie from Algeria .

Change to France

Whether Modibo Maïga played in the Moroccan first class in the 2006/07 season cannot be precisely verified, but there is no data from this period. He is likely to have moved to France in the 2006/07 season , where he initially appeared for the B-team of Le Mans FC in the fourth-class French Championship de France Amateur . He scored two goals in seven league appearances in the 2006/07 season and was in seventh place with the team at the end of the season. In the following season he made the leap into the professional squad, where he was used under Rudi Garcia in 19 first division games and thus half of the championship, but remained goalless himself. He was only on the pitch once for the full duration of the game, most of the time he only came out on the field for a few minutes or sat on the bench without being used. Most of the time he played alongside Gervinho and Stéphane Sessegnon . With the team he reached a ninth place in the table at the end of the season, five points behind a starting place in a European Cup competition. In the 2008/09 season , the Malian advanced to a core force of his team, for whom he made 37 of 38 possible league appearances and only sat on the bench unused in the last game of the season. He scored eight goals and prepared another three for his teammates. With the team, which was struggling with a strong change in personnel at the time, coach Yves Bertucci was followed by Daniel Jeandupeux , who shortly afterwards handed over to interim coach Arnaud Cormier . With the team he only just managed to stay in the league and was even used in three Coupe de France games and one Coupe de la Ligue game.

The personnel rogue at Le Mans continued in 2009/10 when Cormier was replaced by Paulo Duarte , who was dismissed a little later in order to return the post to Arnaud Cormier. Maïga was still a regular this season and brought it in 32 league appearances on seven goals and three assists. At the end of the season he was ranked 18th out of 20 places in the table with the team, a relegation place that was already established weeks before the official end of the season. Furthermore, the offensive player, who had become a regular regular in the national team of his home country , was used in two Coupe-de-France games and one Coupe-de-la-Ligue game. Even before relegation to the French second division , Maïga, who was alternately on the wings and as a striker, moved for a rumored transfer fee of three million euros within Ligue 1 to FC Sochaux , who only just managed to stay in 16th place .

Dangerous attacking power at FC Sochaux

At the club from the east of France, which was founded as a factory club, he soon formed a congenial duo with the Nigerian striker Ideye Brown , with whom he scored half of the 60 Sochaux goals scored at the end of the season. While Brown scored his 15 goals in 35 games, Maïga was just as successful in 37 championship games. With the team he reached a fifth place in the final standings and a related starting place in the play-off round of the 2011/12 UEFA Europa League , in which Sochaux was eliminated with a total score of 0: 4 against the later quarter-finalists Metalist Kharkiv . He was also used in two Coupe de France games in which he scored a goal and one Coupe de la Ligue game. After the first game of the 2011/12 season there was a scandal on the part of Maïga, who announced on August 12, 2011 that he would never play again for Sochaux and instead wanted to switch to Newcastle United . For this reason he did not play the subsequent competitive games of his club, but returned in the Europa League second leg against Kharkiv back in the squad. Since he and his teammate Kévin Anin , who two years later had to end his career early after a paraplegic car accident, were constantly considering a change, their own fans responded with displeasure in the months that followed and accused them of "childish behavior".

As various newspapers such as The Daily Telegraph and L'Équipe reported in mid-October 2011, Maïga is said to have been on the verge of a transfer to Newcastle in the winter transfer phase after Sochaux rejected an early transfer in the summer. The English were already paying a rumored transfer fee of seven million pounds and offered the player a contract with a term of four and a half years. It was announced in mid-December 2011 that he had already passed his medical test and was about to change, but this was denied by L'Équipe shortly afterwards . A change to Newcastle United for a rumored transfer fee of 8.3 million euros did not materialize; The reason should have been knee problems. Although his only 23 league games, which he completed by the end of the 2011/12 season, the Malian, who was mostly used as a center forward, and more rarely on the left wing, acted increasingly dangerous. In his 23 appearances he scored nine goals, including four in three consecutive games from the end of September to the beginning of October, and five in five consecutive games from the end of March to the end of April 2012. He also prepared two goals for his teammates and played one game in the Coupe de France 2011/12 . Furthermore, on September 17, 2011, he had come to a league assignment for the fourth division playing B-team, where he contributed two hits in the 3-2 win over CSO Amnéville .

But still the jump to England

Modibo Maïga as a player for West Ham United (2012)

In the summer of 2012, he completed a medical test at West Ham United , whereupon he signed a four-year contract with the option of two more; It was agreed not to disclose the transfer fee, but it should have been between five and six million euros. At West Ham, he was the fifth signing of the summer behind Mohamed Diamé , George McCartney , Jussi Jääskeläinen and Stephen Henderson . He made his West Ham debut exactly one month after signing on August 18, 2012 in a 1-0 home win over Aston Villa when he came on for Carlton Cole in the 81st minute . He scored his first competitive goal ten days later in a 2-0 win over Crewe Alexandra in the League Cup 2012/13 , when he played through and scored after Nicky Maynard's goal in the 34th minute in the 55th minute to make it 2-0. Another League Cup goal he succeeded in his second use, when he was eliminated in the third round with 1: 4 against Wigan Athletic . By January 1, 2013, he had played 16 league games, mostly only for short appearances and never on the pitch for the full length of the game. He often sat on the substitute bench unused. Altogether he got two hits and one assist during this time. Sam Allardyce alternated with him as a center forward and left winger, let him appear in one game as a right winger. Subsequently, he was not in the official squad for a long time, one reason for this was, among other things, his participation with Mali in the 2012 African Cup of Nations , but even after that he was mostly not in the squad or sat unused on the bench in three league games. It was only in the last game of the season, a 4-2 win over Reading FC , that he came on a brief assignment, in which he also contributed a goal assist. On April 8, he also completed a 90-minute assignment for the reserve team with play in the Professional Development League . With the professional team, he finished the Premier League 2012/13 in tenth place in the table.

He began the 2013/14 season under Allardyce as a regular player and mainly compensated for the departure of veteran Carlton Cole, who, however, came back to the club in October 2013. From this time he was replaced in this position by Cole and sat again unused on the substitute bench before he came back to his assignments from the end of November 2013. Due to a form weakness and the fact that Sam Allardyce still used him regularly, he was criticized by the supporters of the club, but taken by Allardyce himself in protection. By the end of January 2014, the Malian had made a total of 14 league appearances and had scored one goal and prepared another two. He also made four appearances in the 2013/14 League Cup when he scored one goal and made one assist in four games. He also played in the 2013/14 FA Cup , but was eliminated from the current tournament in the third round 5-0 against Nottingham Forest . This was followed by a loan change to the second division team Queens Park Rangers until the end of the 2013/14 season on January 31, 2014 . He was used by Harry Redknapp in the first competitive game after the move; In the 3-3 draw against Burnley FC , the left-footed player scored the last goal of the game after a cross from Junior Hoilett in the 79th minute, after he came onto the pitch for Andy Johnson shortly before . Then Redknapp used him in seven other second division games, where he mostly only made short appearances and most of the time was not even in the squad or took a seat on the bench without being used. While his home club West Ham finished 13th in the final standings, Maïga came fourth with the Queens Park Rangers in the Football League Championship. The team was also able to prevail in the subsequent promotion play-offs and thus made it to the highest football league in the country; the Malian made his last appearance in the 43rd round and was not involved in the play-offs.

On loan to FC Metz and return to England

After his return to West Ham, he completed the pre-season preparation for the 2014/15 Premier League season with the team , but was loaned to France at the end of August, where he signed a loan deal with FC Metz until the end of the season. The contract included an option to make a fixed commitment after the end of the loan period. With the newcomer from Ligue 2 he made his competitive debut shortly before his 27th birthday when he played in the four-round game of Ligue 1 2014/15 , a 2-1 home win over Olympique Lyon , and through from the 64th minute Juan Manuel Falcón was replaced. Under Albert Cartier he was mostly used as a regular on the offensive, but also missed a few league games due to his participation in the 2015 African Cup of Nations in January. In 25 appearances in Ligue 1, he scored a total of nine goals, including two doubles and a hat trick he scored in a 3-2 home win over FC Toulouse on April 4, 2015. He came to one further use in the Coupe de la League 2014/15 , as well as in the Coupe de France 2014/15 . With his nine goals he was also the most dangerous player on his team. Nevertheless, he could not help the team to stay in the league and rose with the team in 19th and penultimate place from the French first class. After returning to England, he played with West Ham in the 2015/16 UEFA Europa League , for the first qualifying round of which the team had qualified after winning the national fair play championship of the 2014/15 Premier League . From the second qualifying round he was used by the new coach Slaven Bilić in all games before the team was eliminated with a total score of 3: 4 against Astra Giurgiu in the third qualifying round. In his four appearances, he managed one assist. Shortly thereafter, he started with West Ham in the 2015/16 league and was used as a substitute in the first three championship games, where he scored a goal for his team in his last appearance, a 3-4 home defeat against AFC Bournemouth .

Transfer to Saudi Arabia

On August 28, 2015, Maïga's move to Saudi Arabia was announced, where the Malian moved to al-Nasr , the reigning champion of the Saudi Professional League , for an unknown transfer fee . He signed a two-year contract with the club until June 30, 2017. He made his competitive debut shortly after his 28th birthday on September 12 in the round of 16 of the Saudi Crown Prince Cup in 2015, when he beat al-Nahda 5-1 scored a hat trick and assisted. Modibo Maïga also scored in his league debut, a 2-0 home win over Najran SC on September 18. He also scored two goals on his first appearance in the Kings Cup ; he also scored a goal in his first appearance in the 2016 AFC Champions League . Under the Uruguayan Jorge da Silva , he soon became a regular in the attack of the capital club. After the departure of the Uruguayan on October 24th, his successor to the World Footballer of the Year 2006, Fabio Cannavaro , mostly used him as a regular, but also used him as a joker. However, he was only able to live out his offensive strength when the Spaniard Raúl Caneda took over the position of coach , when he contributed several assists in addition to goals. After 23 championship rounds, he currently ranks eighth in the table with al-Nasr (as of April 22, 2016) and thus far from a renewed championship title for the club; Maïga was used in 17 league games in which he contributed three goals and three assists. He is also represented with the team in the King's Cup after the team defeated al-Orobah 3-1 in the quarter-finals . However, he was eliminated with al-Nasr after a quarter-final defeat in the Saudi Crown Prince Cup and in the group stage of the AFC Champions League in 2016 .

Maïga made his senior national team debut for Mali on November 17, 2007, when he was used for Souleymane Dembélé in a friendly international match against Senegal by then coach Jean-François Jodar from the 59th minute . After further appearances in friendly games, he played his first game in qualifying for the 2010 World Cup on September 7, 2009 , where he came on the pitch in a 1-0 defeat against the Republic of Congo in the second half for Soumaila Coulibaly . After a group victory in group 10 in the second round and further appearances in friendly international matches, Modibo Maïga played as one of the main players in the third round of the World Cup qualifying, in which the team finished group 4 in third. During this time he also scored his first international goal, when he equalized 1-1 in a 3-1 win over Benin on June 21, 2009 in the 29th minute of the game. After further international appearances in friendly matches against North Korea and Egypt around the turn of the year 2009/10, the offensive player was in the Malian 23-man squad trained by Stephen Keshi , which took part in the 2010 African Cup. Although good offensive performance, the team was eliminated in the group stage as third in Group A from the current tournament.

Under the French Alain Giresse , Modibo Maïga then took part in the qualification for the 2012 African Cup of Nations, where he emerged as group winners of Group A with Mali and was used in the first four of the six qualifying games. In the subsequent African Cup of Nations in 2012 , Giresse also used him as a regular, although the offensive player fell ill with malaria in February 2012 while he was playing in Gabon against the local national team and was in a hospital in the Gabonese capital Libreville for a long time . Because of this, Maïga, who at that time had won the quarter-finals with his home country, fell out for the rest of the tournament. Mali then lost 1-0 to Ivory Coast in the semi-finals ; but won the following game for 3rd place against Ghana 2-0. He was then used again in the national team from May and from that time on played in friendly matches and in two qualifying matches for the 2014 World Cup . In September and October 2012, he and the team successfully qualified for the 2013 African Cup of Nations , where he contributed one goal each to the two -way leg against Botswana .

In the subsequent finals in South Africa he achieved the same result as in the previous year with his home country under Patrice Carteron . After the team lost 4-1 in the quarter-finals against eventual African champions Nigeria , the team reached third place after a 3-1 win over Ghana. After that, Modibo Maïga in the national team was largely quiet for months. Under interim coach Amadou Pathé Diallo , who already held the office for a short time in June 2012, he was mostly not taken into account and only played in a friendly international match against South Korea on October 15, 2013, where he scored the only goal of his team in 1: 3 defeat contributed. Although not considered for more than a year afterwards, he completed the preparation for the 2015 African Cup of Nations under the Polish Henryk Kasperczak and was also brought into the 23-man squad by Kasperczak. After three 1-1 draws against Ivory Coast, Guinea and Cameroon , les Aigles came to a quick end in the group stage; Maïga played in all three games and scored a goal for Mali in the last group game against Guinea. Via a drawing of lots , the last of this kind was needed at the African Cup of Nations in 1988 , Guinea advanced in Group D and Mali had to return home. Under Alain Giresse, who held the position of coach for the second time from March 2015, Maïga made it back to a regular player in the Malian national team, with whom he competed in friendly matches and then in qualifying for the 2017 African Cup . He also played for his home country in qualifying for the 2018 World Cup . To date (as of April 22, 2016) Modibo Maïga has played in at least 51 international matches and scored eleven goals.
