Rudi Garcia (born February 20, 1964 in Nemours , Département Seine-et-Marne ) is a former French football player and current coach . He has been the head coach of Olympique Lyon since October 2019 .
His father, José Garcia , who died in 2008, was also briefly active in French professional football at the end of the 1960s, but played most of the time as an amateur and then went on to become an amateur coach.
Career
As a player
Rudi Garcia started playing football as a youth in Corbeil-Essonnes and Viry-Châtillon . In 1982 he went to the northern French mining region Nord-Pas-de-Calais and from then on played for OSC Lille . After he was only used for the second team ( OSC Lille B ) in his first season , he played for the professionals from the next season. During his time at Lille there was also an incident in September 1985 when Garcia was attacked in the street by a man armed with scissors. In the following five years, however, he was denied titles. In 1988 Garcia went to Normandy and joined SM Caen . It held him there for three years.
In 1991 he moved to the south of France to join FC Martigues , for whom he played for a year. He was then without a club for two years; instead he concentrated on his studies and ended his active career during this time.
As a trainer
In 1994 Rudi Garcia returned to his first club, AS Corbeil-Essonnes, where he was active as a youth coach until 1996 and then coached the men's team until 1998. Also in 1998 Garcia became a fitness coach at AS Saint-Étienne before he was appointed as assistant coach to Robert Nouzaret . On January 5, 2001, he replaced this as head coach. He only held this position until the end of the season. In 2002 Rudi Garcia was coach at FCO Dijon ; in the following five years he led the team in Ligue 2 and established them there. In 2007 Garcia left the Burgundians and went to the then first division Le Mans UC , with whom he managed to stay in the league.
From 2008 to 2013 Garcia worked at Lille OSC . In his first year he led the team in the French league to the top group and then took part in the Europa League . There Lille made it to the last sixteen, where they failed at Liverpool FC . In the 2010/11 season they played again in the Europa League . In the same season, Garcia's team won the French Cup with a 1-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain . It was the first title win for the northern French in 56 years. Just a few weeks after winning the Cup, Lille also won the championship title and thus the double.
On June 12, 2013, he was officially presented as the new coach of AS Roma at a press conference in New York . He signed a two-year contract. On January 13, 2016 it became known that AS Roma had separated from Garcia. The reason for this was the record of a win in the last 13 games. Garcia previously reached the round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League with AS Roma .
On October 21, 2016 Garcia was signed by the French first division club Olympique Marseille as head coach, he received a three-year contract, which was not renewed at the end of the 2018/19 season . With Marseille he reached the final of the 2017/18 UEFA Europa League, which he lost with the team.
At the beginning of October 2019, Garcia took over the position of head coach at a French first division club at Olympique Lyon as the successor to Sylvinho . His contract runs until the end of the 2020/21 season . With Olympique Lyon he lost the final of the Coupe de la Ligue 2019/20 against Paris Saint-Germain.
