Thiago Henrique Mendes Ribeiro (born March 15, 1992 in São Luís ) is a Brazilian soccer player who has been under contract with the French first division club Olympique Lyon since the 2019/20 season .

Career

Born in São Luís , Mendes started his football career with the first division club Goiás EC . After good performance in youth, he sat on the bench of the already safe relegation for the first time on the last day of the 2010 season . On his first appearance in the first team, he then had to wait until September 27, 2011 when he made his debut in the second-rate Série B in the game against the Associação Portuguesa de Desportos . In the rest of the 2011 season, he came on nine more missions. In the following year, the young Mendes established himself as a regular in midfield. With good performances in his 35 missions, he made a significant contribution to the championship title and the associated promotion to the Série A. After the successful season, his contract was extended to 2017. In the following seasons in the Brazilian first division, Mendes was one of the permanent staff of the Goiás team.

In December 2014, the move from Thiago Mendes to league rivals FC São Paulo was announced. He made his league debut for the Tricolor on May 10, 2015, in a 2-1 home win against Flamengo Rio de Janeiro . The first season of 2015 ended in 4th place in the table.

On June 30, 2017, Mendes moved to Europe, to the French first division club OSC Lille , where he signed a five-year contract. The northern French paid a transfer fee of nine million euros for the services of the Brazilian. He made his competitive debut on August 6 in a 3-0 home win against FC Nantes . In the next game he had to be replaced after just 12 minutes due to an injury. On his comeback a month later against ES Troyes AC , he scored his first goal for Lille.

In July 2019, the move from Mendes to Olympique Lyon became known. In the league competitor he succeeded Tanguy Ndombele, who had switched to Tottenham Hotspur , and signed a four-year contract. The transfer fee amounted to 22 million euros, which can be increased to 26.5 million euros through bonus payments. He quickly established himself as a regular player and played 22 league games in the 2019/20 season in which he prepared six goals.
