description

They are strong species with creeping, rhizome-like primary shoots and upright, mostly tree-shaped branched secondary shoots. Trunks and branches have single-row, mostly two- to three-layer lamellar longitudinal stripes. A central strand is present in the trunk cross-section. Pseudoparaphyllia are absent. The primary rung and the lower parts of the secondary rung have flaky, pressed leaves. The leaves in the upper part of the plants are normal, often wrinkled, at least serrated at the top and blunt or pointed. The strong, simple leaf vein ends below the leaf tip. The lamina cells are smooth, rhomboid to linear, leaf cells are more or less clearly differentiated.

The gender distribution is diocesan . Sporophytes are single or clustered together. The elongated seta is smooth, the capsule erect or inclined, straight or curved, ovoid or cylindrical; one annulus is absent, the double peristome can be more or less reduced. The capsule lid is conical and beaked, the kalyptra is smooth and hood-shaped.

Distribution areas are in the northern and southern hemisphere, but mainly in the temperate climatic zones of the northern.

Systematics

According to Frey, Fischer & Stech, the family comprises two types:

Only one type of Climacium dendroides is represented in Germany, Austria and Switzerland .

The genus Pleuroziopsis included in this system is sometimes separated by other authors into a separate family Pleuroziopsaceae with only one species, Pleuroziopsis ruthenica .
