Marco Panascia

Marco Panascia (* 1972 in Venice ) is an Italian modern jazz musician ( double bass , electric bass ) living in the United States .

Panascìa received classical piano lessons from the age of 8. At the age of 16 he started playing electric bass in various rock groups. At the Istituto Musicale Pareggiato Vincenzo Bellini in Catania he studied classical double bass with Sebastiano Nicotra for five years. During the years of the Conservatory, Panascìa played in Italy and abroad with various chamber music groups and the Institute's symphony orchestra, and won prizes in national competitions. In 1992 he discovered jazz at a concert by John Patitucci . He took lessons from Dario Deiddawho became his main influence and encouraged him to cultivate electric and acoustic bass alike. In a short time Panascìa developed into a popular jazz bassist in Sicily and worked with musicians such as Claudio Fasoli , Roy Paci , Andrea Beneventano, Giovanni Mazzarino , Mimmo Cafiero and Francesco Branciamore .

Panascia, who won the Edinburgh International Double Bass Competition in 1998 , came to the United States in 1999; his mentor was Carol Kaye . He then obtained his Bachelor of Music from Berklee College of Music in Boston, then he studied on a scholarship in the Master’s program at the Manhattan School of Music in New York. The first recordings were made in 1998 with Ayako Shirasaki ( Existence ). Since then he has worked in the American jazz scene a. a. with Kenny Barron , Natalie Cole , Andy Bey , Eric Reed , Peter Bernstein and David Kikoski ; He has also made guest appearances at well-known festivals and venues such as the Montreux Jazz Festival , the Hollywood Bowl and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts .

Panascia recorded the two albums Live at the Blue Note and Re-imagination with jazz pianist Eldar , the latter receiving a Grammy nomination in 2008 for the best contemporary jazz album . Throughout his career, he continued to work with Lee Konitz , Joe Lovano , Quincy Jones , Bobby McFerrin , Dave Liebman , Roy Hargrove , Chris Botti , Gary Burton , Seamus Blake , Peter Erskine , Adam Nussbaum , Alvin Queen , Lewis Nash and Tamir Hendelman . In New York he also appears with his own trio and quintet. In the field of jazz he was involved in 26 recording sessions between 2003 and 2017, including a. also with Claudio Roditi , Salvatore Bonafede , Claude Bolling , Benito Madonia , Dado Moroni and Hendrik Meurkens .
