Chervonohrod ( Ukrainian Червоногрод , Polish Czerwonogród ) is a former village in western Ukraine in eastern Podolia . It is located in the municipality of Nyrkiv ( Нирків ), about 1 kilometer south of the village, in Salishchyky district of Ternopil Oblast on the Juryn (Джурин) river.
The ruins of the Tscherwonohrod castle from the 19th century are located in the village ; it was destroyed in Soviet times and is located on the ruins of an even older complex from the 13th century.
The place was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1434, received Magdeburg city charter in 1448 and was initially in the Podolia Voivodeship as part of the aristocratic republic of Poland . From 1772 to 1918 it belonged, with an interruption between 1810 and 1815, as part of the Tarnopol district to Russia , under its Polish name Czerwonogród to Austrian Galicia (until 1918 then in the Zaleszczyki district ).
The importance of the place continued to decrease during this time, it lost its town charter and at the end of 1939 around 500 people were still living in the place.
After the end of World War I the place to come Poland (in the province Tarnopol , Powiat Zaleszczyki , Gmina Uścieczko ), was in the Second World War in September 1939 by the Soviet Union and then the summer of 1941-1944 from Germany occupied, the place was in incorporated the district of Galicia .
After the end of the war, the place was added to the Soviet Union , there it came to the Ukrainian SSR and was renamed Chervone (Червоне). Most of the Polish population was expelled. The construction of a hydropower plant in the mid-1950s resulted in a freeze on emigration, but after the power plant was closed in the 1960s, this trend could no longer be stopped. In 1970, the site was finally officially abandoned and since then has only been part of the Municipality of Nyrkiv.
