Career
In the club
His professional career began in 2005 at Fluminense Rio de Janeiro , where he and his brother were finally discovered by Scout Les Kershaw in 2005 . A scout noticed Rafael at a youth tournament in Hong Kong and wanted to guide him to Manchester. First, however, he was given a preliminary contract, as he was to stay with Fluminense until he was 18. This decided the club management of Manchester United and all other involved.
He finally moved to Manchester United in January 2008. His first appearance in the ManUtd jersey was in the friendly against Peterborough United . His competitive debut was at halftime against Newcastle United . Rafael scored his first goal for Manchester United in the Premier League game on November 8, 2008 against Arsenal . His goal in the 90th minute made the final score 1: 2.
For the 2015/16 season Rafael moved to the French Ligue 1 to Olympique Lyon .
In the national team
In 2005, Rafael won the U-15 South American Championship with the Brazilian U-15 team together with his twin brother . Two years later, both took part in the U-17 South American Championship , which Brazil also finished as tournament winners and thus qualified for the U-17 World Cup in 2007 in South Korea. At the World Cup finals, Rafael and his brother Fábio formed the full-back duo, both of which are highlighted in the official tournament report as " fast full-backs with good technique and an offensive drive ". The tournament ended for the team in the round of 16 after a 0-1 defeat against Ghana.
In 2012 he took part with the Olympic team at the Olympic Games in London , where Brazil wanted to win the gold medal for the first time. In the final, however, Brazil had to admit defeat to the Mexican team 1: 2 . Rafael appeared in all six games and scored the first tournament goal for Brazil in the first game against Egypt .
Trivia
Rafael wanted to forego his salary payments during an injury spell at Olympique Lyon. Olympique was unable to comply with this request. Rafael then donated the money to the OL Foundation, which, among other things, campaigns for integration through sport and the support of sick children.
