George McCartney (born April 29, 1981 in Belfast ) is a former Northern Irish football player .

Player career

The Belfast defender received his first professional contract with the English club AFC Sunderland in 1998 . However, he made his debut in 2000 in the League Cup game against Luton Town . After the 2002/03 season Sunderland rose from the Premier League in the Football League Championship . Bit by bit McCartney established himself as a regular player in the second division and replaced Jason McAteer as team captain in the 2003/04 season because he was seriously injured. In the following season Sunderland rose again to the top flight and McCartney was voted Player of the Season by the club's fans. The defender convinced permanently as a service provider and therefore got from his former coach Mick McCarthy the title "Mr. Consistent " (in German " Mr. Resistant " ) assigned. During the 2005/06 season McCartney fell out six months due to an injury and Sunderland had to relegate again as bottom of the table. The Northern Irishman moved to West Ham United on August 8, 2006 in exchange for Clive Clarke and a transfer fee of £ 600,000 . In the 2006/07 season, McCartney initially only sat on the bench, but then developed into a regular player at the London club, who managed to stay relegated on the last day of the game. In the following 2007/08 season, the defender completed all games in the league and in the cup.

On September 1, 2008 McCartney moved back to his former club AFC Sunderland and signed a contract there for five years. He was the tenth addition to coach Roy Keane , who resigned a short time later because the Black Cats were on a relegation zone after five defeats in six games. At the end of the season, however, the team just managed to stay in the league. In the 2009/10 season, McCartney's team consolidated in midfield of the Premier League and managed to stay up without any problems. Even if the defender played almost all games, the guarantee for this success was the newly signed teammate Darren Bent , who scored half of all Sunderland's goals.

National team

George McCartney has made five caps for Northern Ireland's U-21s and 34 for the senior team so far . He made his debut on September 5, 2001 in Northern Ireland's 3-0 victory over Iceland in qualifying for the 2002 World Cup . In this game he scored the 3-0 in the 60th minute and so far the only international goal in his career. After he did not play an international match in 2005 because of a dispute with coach Lawrie Sanchez , he returned to the team in the game against Liechtenstein on August 22, 2007 under the new coach Nigel Worthington . Only a few days later he caused a stir again when he and his teammate Keith Gillespie fought on the plane on the way home from the game in Iceland . Prior to that, Gillespie had scored an own goal in added time in the game and lost Northern Ireland 2-1. Together with Gillespie, he had to pay a fine of 225,000 euros for this act.
