Keith Gillespie (born February 18, 1975 in Larne , Northern Ireland ) is a former Northern Irish football player .

Club career

The right midfielder began his career in 1993 when he was promoted from the youth team to Manchester United first team . However, he was immediately loaned to Wigan Athletic , where he only stayed two months before he returned to ManU and collected his first professional appearances. In the winter break of 1994/95 Gillespie moved to Newcastle United . It was part of the £ 7million transfer fee Manchester paid for Andrew Cole . Gillespie made 143 competitive appearances for Newcastle, including 15 European Cup games, scoring 13 goals. During that time Newcastle was twice runner-up behind Manchester United and reached the FA Cup finals, which they lost to Arsenal without Gillespie . In 1998 he moved to Blackburn Rovers for £ 2.3 million , for whom he made a total of 138 games and scored eight goals over five seasons. During his time at Blackburn he was awarded one more time to Wigan Athletic.

He then went to Leicester City on a free transfer . 48 games and two goals are his record over the past two years. In August 2005, Gillespie signed a contract with Sheffield United , where he played until 2008. In his first season he played a decisive role in the rise of Sheffield. On January 20, 2007, Gillespie set the dubious record for the fastest red card after a substitution in English football. Just 12 seconds after coming on, he was sent off for an elbow check on Stephen Hunt . Since he had received the red card before the game started again, he was officially not on the field for a single second. Only Walter Boyd of Swansea City had “succeeded” in the same in 2000. Despite some transfer rumors, he signed a new two-year deal in the summer of 2007.

After 2009, Gillespie played for several years at various clubs until he ended his career at Irish club Longford Town FC in 2014 .

National team

With 86 games he currently ( November 2008 ) has the fourth most appearances for Northern Ireland . The heated player caused a sensation in September 2007 when he and his teammate George McCartney fought on the plane on his return flight from an international match in Iceland . In the 2-1 defeat in Iceland, Gillespie scored an own goal in the last minute.
